The OFFICIAL new logo of Starwood Hotels ( erstwhile Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc., the one which we all loved before, especially the Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) before Marriott International took over the brand and DESTROYED IT!!!). I have to say, while it feels good and even slightly nostalgic to think and reminisce about this Legendary brand and now what seems like a quaint moment in time, all the hoopla around this among hotel enthusiasts on social media whether its LinkedIn, Meta, Instagram is over the top. I understand the excitement, but LET'S GET REAL HERE!!! When people are boldly proclaiming that "Marriott Hotels better be Careful", " Anthony Capuano must be Sweating" and the most interesting "We can finally ditch Marriott Bonvoy", I am like, get a REALITY CHECK FELLOWS!!!There is no one WHO HATES Marriott and Tony more than I do, but I deal in FACTS!!!I Love Starwood, was a huge fan, is still a huge fan and adore BARRY STERNLICHT, who is second in my book after the Legendary Ian Schrager for disrupting the hotel scene. But do you really think that the new Starwood can really overtake Marriott? That SHIP has sadly sailed. Realistically not even possible. I honestly don't think that's what even Barry wants or envisioned with his second innings. Here are the facts, the new starwood has barely 30 properties Open and in the pipeline. That is a miniscule, almost microscopic number when compared to the 9300 hotels Marriott has in 144 countries. Baccarat Hotels & Resorts, 1 Hotels and Treehouse Hotels are three brands in the portfolio. I really like Baccarat, 1 hotels is alright and Treehouse isn't something that's my style. When Barry Started Starwood the first time in 1995, he went the 'Acquisition' mode, first buying Westin Hotels & Resorts, then Sheraton Hotels & Resorts, St. Regis Hotels & Resorts and Le Méridien Hotels & Resorts. The only organic brand he created was W Hotels which is his lasting legacy. He left the company in 2005 and when it was acquired in 2015, Starwood had roughly 1300 hotels in 100 countries. Sizable portfolio, and took 30 years to achieve that. This time around Barry seems to want to go the 'Organic' route instead of acquiring brands and there is NO WAY he can close the gap with Marriott in that way. ( The first Hyatt hotel opened in 1957 and almost 70 years later, Hyatt Hotels Corporation has ONLY 1300 hotels in 84 countries. ITS NOT EASY!!!) And then there is TONY!!!Hate him as much as you want, Tony is Ruthless, a Developmental Guru and Genius, the best at what he does which is increasing room count and he is VICIOUS!!!I guarantee you, he is right now sitting with his team Rajeev Menon, Peggy Roe, Tina Edmundson and others and plotting how to nip Barry's second coming in the bud even if they don't really have to do anything. Unless Barry buys Hilton or IHG Hotels & Resorts, this is IMPOSSIBLE!!! Having said that, I wish CEO Raul Leal the very best. I hope he can prove me wrong!!Good Luck!!!
