Air travel is a major contributor to global carbon emissions—but stopping travel isn’t an option. In fact, traveling could rise by 3–4% annually by 2024, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA). So, what’s the solution? Some, including Tomorrow's Air, say carbon removal, also known as direct air capture (DAC), is one viable way for airlines to remove their carbon footprint. The Swiss company Climeworks in 2021 opened the first DAC plant in Iceland, and plans to expand with a second, larger plant soon. There are strong arguments both for and against DAC, and Matador editor Tim Wenger spoke with experts on each side to report on what may lie ahead.
