The company’s simulation and modeling product allows materials scientists the capability to design and prototype new compounds in a rapid and cost-effective manner with applications in a variety of fields including semiconductor, clean energy, aerospace/automotive, and others. Mat3ra.com was founded by former UC Berkeley scientists and engineers, has successfully attracted private investments, including funding by the Alchemist Accelerator, Breakout Labs, Tim Draper, Serguei Beloussov + other prominent investors, and is actively working with major US enterprises and research institutions worldwide. We highlight (1) a video tutorial on using a web-based Jupyter Lit environment available in our platform and pre-populated with the REST API credentials for easy a, (2) the ability to use Wave.js to visualize 3D structures in Jupyter notebooks similar to ASE or X3D visualizers, (3) the ability to initialize the pseudopotentials with recommended cutoff values in the database.     ?? Industry News Europe provides €24 million for cloud-based chip design platform. Norway’s Tampere University and 11 other partners have received €24 million in European Union funding to develop a “comprehensive” chip design platform available to startups and SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises). The Design Platform consortium comprises 12 European research organizations and universities and has the task of creating a platform to house a comprehensive range of EDA tools and services. The Design Platform is describes as a cloud-based virtual environment to be made available across the European Union, integrating existing and novel design facilities, from IP libraries to EDA tools, as well as providing a hub for access support services. The Design Platform is intended to underpin access to the Chips for Europe pilot line initiative launched under the European CHIPS Act. Pat Gelsinger, who recently quit as CEO of chip giant Intel, has said he has made an investment in compute-in-memory startup Fractile Ltd. (London). In July 2024 Fractile announced it had raised US$15 million to support the development of its in-memory AI compute that it claims can run the latest AI models at least 100x faster and 10x cheaper. That funding round was co-led by Kindred Capital, NATO Innovation Fund, and Oxford Science Enterprises, alongside leading angel investors including Herman Hauser of ASM, Stan Boland formerly of Icera and Five.ai and Amar Shah of Wayve.     Research papers we love ?? ?? Inverse Design of Photonic Surfaces via High throughputFemtosecond Laser Processing and Tandem NeuralNetworks. ?? Minok Park, Luka Grbˇci′c, Parham Motameni, Spencer Song, Alok Singh,Dante Malagrino, Mahmoud Elzouka, Puya H. Vahabi, Alberto Todeschini, Wibe Albert deJong, Ravi Prasher, Vassilia Zorba, and Sean D. Lubner. This work demonstrates a method to design photonic surfaces by combiningfemtosecond laser processing with the inverse design capabilities of tandemneural networks that directly link laser fabrication parameters to their resultingtextured substrate optical properties. High throughput fabrication andcharacterization platforms are developed that generate a dataset comprising35280 unique microtextured surfaces on stainless steel with correspondingmeasured spectral emissivities. The trained model utilizes the nonlinearone-to-many mapping between spectral emissivity and laser parameters.Consequently, it generates predominantly novel designs, which reproduce thefull range of spectral emissivities (average root-mean-squared-error < 2.5%)using only a compact region of laser parameter space 25 times smaller thanwhat is represented in the training data. Finally, the inverse design model isexperimentally validated on a thermophotovoltaic emitter design application.By synergizing laser-matter interactions with neural network capabilities, theapproach o?ers insights into accelerating the discovery of photonic surfaces,advancing energy harvesting technologies.
