Mastery Charter Schools and Mastery Schools of Camden form a non-profit school network of charter, turnaround and renaissance schools in Philadelphia, PA and Camden, NJ, serving over 14,000 students in grades K-12. Our mission is to ensure all students learn the academic and personal skills they need to be truly prepared for postsecondary success and able to pursue their dreams. Mastery is nationally recognized for its ability to turn around failing neighborhood schools and to drive dramatic student achievement gains. In our turnaround schools, test scores have increased, on average, more than 40 percentage points per grade and subject after three years, violence decreased by 80% and student turnover dropped by one-third. Community partners from Guaranteed Rate, Compass Greater Philadelphia, Clearly Dental, barre3 Cherry Hill, and Klein's Supermarket spread holiday cheer last week by delivering 300 turkeys to six Mastery schools before Thanksgiving. School leaders were thrilled to meet the donors and distribute turkeys to families on Friday afternoon, or in the case of Simon Gratz High School, on Saturday at their annual Gratz Gives event. We’re grateful to have participated in the 7th annual Black Men in Education Convening (#BMEC2024), a transformative event by the Center for Black Educator Development focused on empowering Black male educators and advancing equity in education. Representation matters, and Black male educators are vital to creating equitable, inclusive learning environments that inspire our students and strengthen our community. With more than 30 Mastery representatives in attendance, our educators immersed themselves in workshops, discussions, and networking opportunities centered on activism and equity. The insights and energy gained will further enrich our classrooms and strengthen our commitment to providing high-quality education for all students. The Mastery Educator Equity Initiative (MEEI) supports uncertified teachers of color in high-needs areas to complete alternative certification programs and assists general education teachers in obtaining special education certification. Grant recipient Sasha Butler, Special Education Teacher at Smedley Elementary, shares her story. Sasha’s teaching journey has been marked by perseverance. After enrolling in a graduate program in 2021, she faced devastating challenges, including financial hardships and personal losses. Yet, through it all, she remained committed to her calling as an educator. Thanks to a grant through the MEEI, Sasha is currently working to complete her education, fulfilling her late mother's dream, all while continuing to positively impact the lives of her students. MEEI is funded by the Teacher and School Leader Incentive Program (TSL) through the U.S. Department of Education and the Center for Black Educator Development’s Black Teacher Pipeline grant.
