PURPOSE: Mastery Transcript Consortium? (MTC), an ETS company, is a national and global nonprofit membership organization that helps make mastery learning—or competency-based education—available to all learners. Because this approach does not generate traditional metrics, we co-create uniquely flexible and scalable learning records to solve the challenge of credentialing. MTC accelerates equitable access to and widespread implementation of mastery learning models, empowering students to showcase competencies and share evidence of their learning.

“Competency-based mastery learning emphasizes skill development and content application. This approach fosters a deeper understanding of content, focuses on essential curricula-based and FCPS Portrait of Graduate skills, inspires student engagement, and ensures readiness for real-world challenges.” MTC member Madison High School, part of the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) system, has focused its learning initiatives on skill mastery and competency-based learning. Their MAD Wings program gives students in 9th-12th grades the opportunity to create an MTC Learning Record and fully demonstrate the outcomes of their education both in and out of the classroom. “Grades began as a tool for assessing learning but quickly became the point of the exercise. For many students, the goal of school isn’t to learn. It’s to get an A.” Thanks to bestselling non-fiction author, Daniel Pink, for a shout-out to MTC members in his recent WaPo article! Pink analyzed the history of grading and its failures in modern education and highlighted new approaches driving toward a more learner-centered future. MTC offers an alternative to traditional transcripts. Our competency-based digital learning records provide the ability for schools to track learners’ growth over time. “I chose to do the mastery learning record because I wanted to highlight who I was as a person outside of my grades and the person I was on paper. I wanted to showcase who I was through all the things I’m passionate about, and all of the things that make me who I am.” In the third video of their series, Nipmuc shows how the MTC Learning Record (MLR) allows students to communicate personalized stories about their learning journeys. Class of 2025 Seniors Eliza Kurze and Hannah Le share their personal statements and describe why they chose to create an MLR. Nipmuc invites viewers to be inspired by their students and join them as they reimagine school, learning, and student assessment. “Now, more than ever, a student’s learning experiences must include the acquisition of rigorous academic content and the durable skills and mindsets students need to thrive in the post-secondary plan of their choice.” Created and informed by more than 120 stakeholders, including educators, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction's Portrait of a Graduate highlights the importance of students’ ability to adapt, collaborate, communicate, think critically, show empathy, learn, and take personal responsibility. “MTC’s design philosophy is rooted in that concept of increasing student agency: our tools enable learners to curate their unique learning records, uploading evidence of their best work in connection to the competencies and skills their school or district cares most about. In turn, educators provide verification and feedback, using a school’s rubrics.” Check it out! MTC is featured in a new report released by 1EdTech Consortium, highlighting 12 examples of powerful microcredential programs. “I chose to create the MLR for myself because, at Nipmuc, I was able to experience a lot of amazing learning opportunities, but I had no way to showcase them when I was applying to colleges, and I really thought that they were a great example of who I was as a student.” In the third video of their series, Nipmuc Regional High School shows how the MTC Learning Record (MLR) allows students to communicate personalized stories about their learning journeys. Class of 2025 Seniors Lily Killeen and Arlo Gibbons share their personal statements and why they chose to create an MLR.
