When yet another hearing president was chosen, the community refused to stay silent. Students and staff took action, and protests erupted in response. ??Their message was clear: “Deaf President Now!” After a week of unwavering determination, the barriers that were formerly in place, were broken. Dr. I. King Jordan became the university’s first Deaf president. On the heels of International Day for Digital Learning, we are thrilled to announce an inspiring new partnership between the Mayan Languages Preservation Project and the Global Digital Library (GDL)! ? Together, we're creating free, culturally relevant educational books designed to teach young Mayan speakers foundational literacy and numeracy skills. GDL is a repository of free, open-source learning resources, specifically aimed at improving literacy and numeracy among children in underserved regions. These resources will be translated into multiple Mayan languages, ensuring they resonate deeply within our communities. Books will be accessible digitally, empowering young learners to download and engage at no cost. ? With GDL’s innovative use of AI and cloud technology, combined with the expertise of the Mayan Languages Preservation & Digitization Project team and?MasterWord’s support, we are bringing critical learning materials to underserved Mayan-speaking communities.
