Dear Client, If you have a full day conference, let’s say from 9:00am to 3:00pm- you will need at least two interpreters, anything past an hour- you will need two interpreters, if technical or fast paced such as a hearing or meeting with public comment- it should always be two interpreters regardless of how long. Whether we are contracted to interpret for one person or 100, the work is not less. The same run of show will occur, same presentations, same dynamics, and we will interpret all of it. The work is not less, nor less important just because we are only interpreting for a small group. No, we cannot be ok with one interpreter just because you have low participation of monolingual speakers who need our services. What we should really be focusing on is going the extra mile on outreach and relationship building so that people want to show up and utilize yours and our services. Three things I was told this month after submitting estimates for review: “We think one interpreter is enough since there are only a few participants requesting interpretation for this full day event,” or, “You only have to interpret what is important, don’t worry about interpreting everything, so, one interpreter will do,” and worst of all, “This is a waste of money since nobody requests interpretation anyways, so, just send one person so we can say we offered the service.” I must sound like a record. I have to repeat this much too often. No wonder it is hard to grow the dedicated interpreter pool. Linguistica Interpreting & Translation, LLC
