"Your legacy is not about what you do; it's about the people that you develop." We had the incredible privilege to sit down with Pete Ochs for a masterclass on the topic of adversity and resilience. Pete is the Chairman of Capital III and the Chief Steward at Enterprise Stewardship. Three principles of resilience that we can all learn from Pete: 1. Think long, not big. Long-term thinking leads to greater rewards and a more meaningful legacy. Embrace the power of compounding, plan for the future, and stay patient. 2. Stewardship Over Ownership. Focus on managing resources wisely and for the benefit of others, rather than accumulating wealth for personal gain. 3. Personal Planning and Execution. Develop a personal mission statement and identify your core values. Every Sunday night, review your upcoming week and align your tasks with your personal goals and values.

We had the privilege to sit down with Daniel Shear this week to discuss lessons learned from an Army Ranger turned entreprenuer. The insights that Daniel shared are powerful, punctuated by something his wife shared upon his return from deployment. "With tears in her eyes, she said, you know, we need your leadership here at home just as much as those guys need it, you know, overseas." Three resilience principles: 1. Leadership Under Pressure: Daniel's military experience taught him the importance of staying calm, building trust, and taking initiative in crisis situations. 2. The Importance of Accountability: Owning mistakes and maintaining integrity are vital for building credibility and trust. Daniel's story emphasized learning from failures and being transparent, which are essential for personal and professional growth. 3. Balancing Family and Business: Integrating work and family life is key to maintaining meaningful relationships. Daniel involves his family in his bakery business, highlighting the importance of setting boundaries and prioritizing relationships. This is a conversation you don't want to miss. "I used to feel like I had been set aside, right? My parents had set me aside, 'We don’t want you'. And what I really realized later through my relationship with God, I wasn’t set aside... I was being set apart." A powerful conversation with Blake Williams on this weeks podcast. Blake has experienced profound loss in his life yet maintains an incredible perspective on what it means to live a purpose filled life. Three core thoughts: 1. E + R = O Events + Response = Outcomes. We can only control the "R". Practice habits that promote a positive response to adversity, 2. Embrace Discomfort Intentionally put yourself in challenging situations to build mental toughness and resilience. This, more than anything else, will help you prepare for the inevitable moments of deep adversity that life will present. 3. Cultivate a Positive Mindset through Goal Setting Focus on the possibilities and opportunities that lie ahead, rather than dwelling on past hardships. Engage with people who uplift and inspire you, and avoid those who bring negativity into your life.

In this weeks episode, Ryan Seager and Mark Phillips sat down with Keith Hadley of the The Table Group to discuss all things organization health. Keith has seen leadership from countless different angles and had some truly noteworthy wisdom to share with the listeners. A few highlights: **Imposter Syndrome and Its Prevalence Among Leaders**: Imposter syndrome is a common phenomenon among leaders, where they doubt their abilities despite evident success. Recognizing and addressing this can help leaders build confidence and authenticity. **Importance of Vulnerability-Based Trust in Organizations**: Establishing trust through vulnerability is crucial in organizations. When leaders and team members are open about their weaknesses and mistakes, it fosters a culture of honesty and collaboration. **Distinction Between Being Nice and Being Kind in Leadership**: Being nice often involves avoiding conflict and seeking approval, whereas being kind involves making tough decisions and providing honest feedback for the betterment of the team and organization. I turned to her and I said... "Am I going to die?" and she goes, "You're going to live," and I felt this peace come over me which to this day still makes me emotional... Jim's story of resilience is one that will stop you in your tracks. Our top three takeaways from this incredible conversation. 1. Work-life cohesion and investing in key relationships: Jim emphasizes the significance of work-life cohesion, where professional and personal lives are harmoniously integrated. He believes that investing time and effort in key relationships, both at work and at home, is crucial for overall well-being and success. 2. Embracing challenges and learning from failures: Embracing challenges is a cornerstone of Jim's life philosophy. He believes that facing difficulties head-on and learning from failures are essential for growth and development. Each setback is an opportunity to gain insights, refine strategies, and build resilience. This mindset transforms obstacles into stepping stones toward greater achievements. 3. Wisdom of investing in relationships and taking more risks in life: Jim underscores the wisdom of investing in relationships, as they are the bedrock of personal and professional success. Strong relationships provide support, opportunities, and a sense of belonging. It also allows for more calculated risks in life, as they often lead to significant rewards and personal growth. Embracing uncertainty and stepping out of one's comfort zone can unlock new possibilities and drive meaningful progress. cc: Jim Hallene, Ryan Seager, Mark Phillips

Founder & Managing Partner at 11 Tribes Ventures

A year ago, I sat down with Erik Severinghaus and shared our passion at 11 Tribes for the entrepreneurial journey - not just the mountain top moments, but the moments of adversity that truly define someone. He responded, "you're building a resilience focused venture fund and you're just now telling me about it?" It's been a privilege to get to know Erik since and an honor to host him on the most recent episode of Masters of Resilience. I'll leave you with the quote below from Erik... "I felt way closer to death in the psychological parts of my entrepreneurial journey than I even did on the worlds tallest mountain." This entrepreneurship thing is no joke, make sure you have the right support (people, habits, structure) around you and build a mindset that, as Erik puts it, is content in failure or success. There aren't many leaders in the world like Chris Carneal. Not just because of what he has built at Booster, but because of the way he cares about people. His journey and hard earned wisdom is precisely what more aspiring leaders need to look to as a developmental mold. Ryan Seager and I spent an hour with Chris on the Masters of Resilience podcast and I'm hopeful you'll take a moment to hear Chris' story for yourself. As Chris shared - "The inner life and outer life are both incredibly important - I ensure that I am as disciplined with my internal habits as I am in my external habits". Link to the episode in the comments. Shoutout to the man, the myth, the legend Daniel Prokop for first introducing Chris and I!

One of the (many) perks of the roles that I've held over the years is the opportunity and motivation to seek out people who think differently. I met Mark Phillips of 11 Tribes Ventures a few years back and was struck by his refreshing and genuine view on the world of entrepreneurship, and we aligned almost immediately on one of my core principles, putting #peoplefirst. Mark recently teamed up with long-time friend Ryan Seager to launch the "Masters of Resilience" podcast, highlighting the zigs and zags, the ups and downs, the highs and lows of the entrepreneurial journey and the ways people pick themselves up to keep going. It's a great listen and I'm sure you'll enjoy it as much as I did! #podcast #resilience #venturecapital https://lnkd.in/e-9FNxCX
