They say 'never meet your heroes.' Well, I met one of mine and here's how it went. ? I have been a fan of Lynne Twist for many years now. If you aren't familiar with her and her work, I encourage you to become so. Lynne has dedicated her life to service and innovation, to healing the world, and to connecting wisdom gained from cultures across the globe to elevate humanity. So, you know, playing small… ;) ? When I read her book “The Soul of Money” I was deeply inspired. But that was nothing compared to sitting in the audience at the Conscious Capitalism, Inc. conference in Dallas last month where she was a headliner. Slight in stature and mighty in spirit, her presence filled the enormous meeting room with so much joy and passion that it moved all 200 and some-odd participants to tears. She is, as the kids say, the real real. ? Coming of age in the entertainment industry, I rarely find myself star struck. Too often did I encounter an actor or artist that admired only to find out?that they were…shall we say…imperfect.? ? Now, I don't want to overstate this because everyone has their flaws. In this case, however, meeting Lynne Twist was anything but a let down. In fact, getting to connect with her - and witnessing her authentic, whole-body commitment to purpose?- was among the most inspiring, and validating experience of my career. ? After conference hopping this spring, I am excited to dive in to all of these juicy morsels. They are among those that I collected from some of the amazing speakers and thought leaders from whom I gained tremendous insight and inspiration. I am already deep into John Mackey’s book The Whole Story about his experiences as co-founder of Whole Foods. So fascinating! Also on the list and not pictured (but in my Audible queue) is Neha Sangwan, M.D. ‘s book ‘Powered by Me: From Burnout to Fully Charged in Work and Life’. (I would have bought it but it was already sold out!) Some people like to relax on the beach with a romance novel. For me, nerding out with a good leadership book helps me relax.?? ???? Being honored as a Top Coach of 2024 unpacks a lot of feelings. I started my business because I felt called to use my gifts in ways that I hadn't fully realized up until that point. Yet, the journey to get here wasn’t always smooth. And it was scary to take the leap. I also knew deep in my soul that I had to do it. For anyone else just starting out, here’s what I hope you can learn from my experience: ?? Following your heart and intuition is just as important as thinking things through. When the path before you isn't clear - or even logical - what you know within you is a powerful north star. ?? Mistakes are essential. As someone who felt hamstrung by perfectionism for much of my life, I understand the stress and pressure that can occur when we mis-step. There have been times when I was certain my bad judgement in one circumstance was the end of my whole world. It wasn't. I learned, I grew, and I got better. Sure, it hurt a lot of the time. But the rewards that have come from confronting the most broken parts of myself and my work are 100% worth it. ?? You matter. Your work matters. Your voice matters. You have impact on the people and the environments around you. Embrace that. Use your powers for good, to lift up others, and help our planet thrive. It's a tremendous responsibility when we step into it. It is also where the good stuff is. I am so grateful to Erin Halper, CEO of The Upside and the incredible community of The Upside for having my back for the last several years. None of us are successful in a vacuum, and it is SO much more fun when we support one another. My clients are amazing. They do the real work. It's a privilege to cheer them on. Last week I had the EPIC experience of attending the Future of Everything Festival put on by the The Wall Street Journal. There were so many compelling speakers and a wealth of information to take in. Here are some of the top take aways: 1. AI is here to stay. We do not yet know the full potential or impact of it on business, the workforce, and society (clearly). While there is a great deal of concern about this there are also reasons for optimism. My favorite thoughts on this topic were by Astro Teller who encouraged the audience, as we push progress forward, to consider the salient elements of being human: taking care, having fun, positive impact and to love and be loved. 2. We are at a critical point in our evolution as a species. People are hurting. The planet is changing. We have some profound choices to make as a collective: will we collaborate, heal, take care of the planet and one another? Or will we turn a blind eye at our peril? It is ours decide and act upon. Right now. 3. There are many awesome, powerful people out there who are doing amazing work in every sector that are driving positive impact, change, and growth. Sure, the challenges of our time can be massively anxiety producing - AND the solutions and innovations are deeply inspiring. There were several moving examples of this: from tech, to food, to service, science and art, there is a great deal purpose-driven work happening in the right direction. It's all around us. And we can jump in. A particular crowd (and personal) favorite was of Sesame Workshop and their moving work with displaced children around the world. And a guest appearance from Elmo made everyone glow with child-like joy. Yes, even at the WSJ. That's pretty magical. More on this to come...for now I am reinvigorated by good people trying to figure it out. And motivated to keep striving to be one of them. What exactly is Conscious Leadership? It sounds good, right? Some say that it is just a given in leadership. That somehow the acquisition or achievement of a role automatically transforms the holder of that role into a wiser, more thoughtful, more emapathic contributor. If you read that and laughed to yourself, you know that’s not how it works. And while I believe that most people who are reaching for those roles do mean well (please allow me my optimism), the truth is we don’t just transform magically into the best version of ourselves in an instant. So what can we do? What are the rules of becoming a conscious leader? And how on earth do we enact them? My friends, there are no “rules” per se. But there are commitments we can make. In their groundbreaking book “The 15 Commitments of Conscious Leadership” (catchy title, eh?), Dethner, Chapman, and Warner Klemp outline these tenets clearly. TLDR… Here’s #1 1. Responsibility BY ME I commit to taking full responsibility for the circumstances of my life, and my physical, emotional, mental and spiritual wellbeing. I commit to support others to take full responsibility for their lives. Pretty powerful, eh? So let’s begin with a question: What is one area of your leadership in work and/or life for which you can take radical responsibility?
