We talked to A LOT of people this year leading up to the 2024 MTG Summit.?? ?? Some were industry leaders, some had a few projects under their belt.??? ?? Many were just getting started.??? ?? ?? ?Why does this matter??? ?? Want more #masstimber buildings? We need more #masstimber?practitioners.?? ?? That means helping AEC & Developer teams get the resources they need to?participate.?? ?? ?? We identified the most common requests by profession AND the #1?answer shared by all.?? ?? ?? ? So, what do they need? ??? ?? Based on those 1000+ conversations, and direct feedback from 262 Summit attendees, here's what we found.??? ?? ?????????????????????? We found a fairly even mix between teams looking to get started, and teams looking to improve upon their existing?experience?and knowledge.??? ?? ? Basic information to get started, and advanced knowledge on best practices around design/detail strategies and pricing practicalities were the most common requests.??? ?? ??????????????????? The engineers we spoke with were the most up-to-speed profession on #masstimber.??? ?? ? They were interested in the latest trends, advancements and solutions to common problems. Code, costs, cores, connections, & in-depth technical content were most cited.?? ?? ?????????????????????????? Most of these teams were looking at if/how to?fold #masstimber?into their businesses.??? ?? ? Market trends and state of the industry were highly referenced. Nuances of working with mass timber and best practices to be successful were a close second (particularly in housing applications).?? ?? ??????????????????/????????????? Public and private sector developers had similar learning objectives.?? ?? ? Notably but perhaps unsurprisingly, risk management (procurement & nuances) and cost/viability stood out. Housing applications were a focal point of the Summit, and these teams were highly interested in the economics of private market pro-forma driven feasibility.?? ?? ?? ? But all these teams had 1 overwhelmingly common request ???? ?? ?? A community of like-minded people to engage with and learn from.??? ?? ?? It was the #1?response in every single category.??? ?? ?? What's our takeaway??? ?? Community building and engagement will help with every requested area.?? ?? Creating spaces to teach, learn and connect are important for recruiting new teams into the #masstimbermovement.?? ?? That’s what these teams are looking for.?? ?? Fire salvage and restoration should not be controversial topics. If you are a small wood lot owner, wouldn't you want to turn dead tress into revenue to help replant and restore your property? What is the alternative? Stacking the wood and allowing it to decompose? Chipping it? Landfill? Shouldn't the same questions be asked of our public land recovery? We immediately salvaged the 5800 acres impacted by the Beachie Creek fire and replanted 3.5 million seedlings within 2 years. The dead trees went into wood products for US consumers. The goal was to seamlessly blend tradition with contemporary design. ? ?????The masonry-clad addition, extending the scale of the existing 19th-century structures along Water Street, conceals a remarkable secret within its walls: a mass timber frame fabricated in Albert Lea, Minnesota. ? ?????The exposed interior structure showcases Douglas fir & Western Red Cedar & the canopy has Alaskan Yellow Cedar.? ? ?????The Commons also creates a central outdoor gathering space, unifying the campus and extending Vesterheim’s Heritage Park with Water Street. ? ?? Vesterheim Commons stands as visionary design, with respect for cultural heritage, and a commitment to sustainable building practices can converge to create a truly exceptional place. The innovative use of mass timber not only significantly reduces the building's environmental footprint but also imbues it with a tangible warmth and character that deeply resonates with the cultural narratives it safeguards. ?? How BCIT's Hybrid Mass Timber Project Wins ?? British Columbia Institute of Technology Student Housing ?? Here's what we learned from the project team: ? The goal was to address the critical need for student housing. ? ??????Of the 469 units, 264 are self-contained studios, and 206 are single-bedroom units with shared kitchens, bathrooms, study spaces, and common areas. ? ?????The project distinguishes itself through its mass timber construction, specifically utilizing a CLT point-supported structure with mass timber floors supported by steel HSS columns. Fast + Epp, the structural engineers for the project, proposed this design to meet both sustainability and architectural demands.?? ? ?????The CLT is made from Hem-Fir, a strong and versatile species group abundant in B.C. that is currently underutilized. ? ?? The BCIT Tall Timber Student Housing project is more than just a building; it's a model for sustainable, affordable, and innovative construction. By using mass timber construction, incorporating sustainable design principles, and integrating community and cultural spaces, BCIT is setting a new standard for campus development.
