#Spotlight moment on Dakota DelSignore , E.I.T. Traffic Safety Engineer at #MassDOT. My main duties involve all aspects of Road Safety Audits (RSAs) including coordinating and attending meetings and performing data and report reviews. RSAs bring together a multi-disciplinary team of professionals to examine and improve the safety performance of intersections and roadways. Additionally, I work with the state’s crash detection data portal (IMPACT) to prioritize areas in need of safety improvements and retrieve crash reports upon request. I also participate in research efforts focused on traffic safety through the NCHRP and work with our partners at UMass. I am most proud of my involvement in MassDOT’s implementation of the Focus On Reducing Rural Road Departures (FoRRRwD) which provides signs and materials to communities with high-risk rural roads in Districts 1, 2, and 3. Working with municipalities on this effort has been rewarding, and it has been a great feeling to oversee this work from start to finish. The best part of being in this role is getting to interact with local officials and MassDOT staff across the state working towards a common goal of improving the safety of all users in transportation projects and expanding a positive safety culture. Moreover, working at MassDOT has allowed me to balance both my professional and personal goals and interests. The flexible work schedule lets me maximize productivity while enjoying my life outside of work. My advice to someone on their career journey would be to make important connections, both in your place of work with those in similar roles within your industry of expertise. Be a friendly face and strive to be dependable. Stay motivated and focused on improving yourself a little each day!
