Kudos to our partners at Just A Start on the grand opening of its new Economic Mobility Hub at Rindge Commons. The Economic Mobility Hub at Rindge Commons is a 70,000-square-foot, six-story, mixed-use building located at the intersection of Rindge Avenue and Alewife Brook Parkway. Just-A-Start’s Biomedical Careers Training Program has received six MLSC grants totaling more than $1.1 million. The recent investment in the new bioscience lab totals $941,161, making the MLSC the single largest financial contributor to the Economic Mobility Hub. Read more: https://ow.ly/jj0b50TNgr0

A great day for our ecosystem celebrating the unveiling of Vertex Pharmaceuticals' Jeffrey Leiden Center for Cell and Genetic Therapies. During her remarks, Governor Maura Healey announced $21.4 million in tax incentive awards to 19 life sciences companies. The awards, provided through the?MLSC’s Tax Incentive Program, are expected to create 1,155 new life sciences industry jobs in Massachusetts. Read more: https://lnkd.in/e_vAmzFt

A special day for our ecosystem and for celebrating breakthroughs as the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for the discovery of microRNA and its role in post-transcriptional gene regulation. The MLSC is proud of its continued partnership with UMass Chan Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and institutions across Massachusetts to accelerate the impact of cutting-edge technologies and supporting groundbreaking ideas in RNA-based medicines and other breakthroughs that can transform lives on a global scale. Today, the Healey-Driscoll administration announced that Dr. Kirk Taylor will serve as the Massachusetts Life Science Center’s (MLSC) new President and CEO. Taylor is a trained neurologist who brings more than 25 years of industry experience, including medical affairs and clinical development strategy, entrepreneurial vision, and strategic leadership, to the role.? The MLSC Board of Directors voted to confirm Taylor’s role today, and he will begin on October 8. Read more: https://lnkd.in/e3hi9sfk

Our partners at MassBio unveiled their five-year strategic plan, Vision 2030, a framework outlining a series of ambitious goals to further Massachusetts’ status as the world’s premier life sciences hub. The plan lays out a path to add up to $1 billion to the state’s GDP by the start of 2030, and to create hundreds more biopharma and life sciences jobs, among other initiatives. In September 2023, Massachusetts secured the federal Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) Investor Catalyst Hub. Since the launch of the Hub, numerous Massachusetts-based companies and institutions have secured upwards of more than $300 million from ARPA-H, including more than $70 million just in the past two weeks. The Hub’s base of operations being in Massachusetts is no accident. The state’s selection to host the Investor Catalyst Hub demonstrates the federal government’s recognition of Massachusetts as a leading model for health care delivery and life sciences innovation. ?? https://lnkd.in/g7asURUB

New application rounds of MLSC programming for Research Infrastructure, Bits to Bytes, Novel Therapeutics Delivery, and our Women’s Health Initiative, are now underway. The MLSC is adding an additional layer of equity to these returning programs during the application process, asking applicants to not only consider gender diversity, but other overlooked factors such as race, geography, and other social determinants of health.
