One of the highlights of my year so far has been to represent MHP (Massachusetts Housing Partnership), along with colleague Kassie Infante, on the Mel King Institute advisory committee for the Chain of Change community book reading. Chain of Change: Struggles for Black Community Development is a history of the Black community in Boston from the 1950s to 1970s. In the book, community organizer and politician Mel King shows how Black consciousness and power have developed through the struggles around jobs, housing, education, and politics. At MHP, Kassie and I facilitated book discussions with staff. We were invited to be part of the reflection event in which participating organizations around the state gathered at The Boston Foundation. All of us representing 30-plus organizations had a lovely time discussing Mel King’s work as a community builder, listening to a selection of poetry, forming a symbolic chain out of ribbons, and developing action plans to incorporate into our work. It was a special moment for me to be able to meet Mel King’s daughter, Pamela, and take a photo with her. Shirronda Almeida Anne Lewis Alma Balonon-Rosen Dana LeWinter
