The Massachusetts Department of Correction has approximately 6,200 inmates in custody. There are 13 facilities with four different security levels: Maximum, Medium, Minimum and Pre-release. The gender breakdown in Massachusetts DOC is 96% male and 4% female. We have approximately 1700 inmates serving a life sentence. We have over 970 active volunteers at our prisons. Approximately 3950 staff members, in which 65% are security staff. ACA Eagle award recipient.

Commissioner Ifill’s conversation also highlighted and informed the incarcerated population about the services of the Probation Department and its role in helping justice involved persons. Today, the Massachusetts Department of Correction is honoring K9 Max, who served the Department since 2017 and passed away recently. A loyal partner to Sgt. Matthew Praplaski, Max and his handler served the Commonwealth, the DOC and the public in so many ways. During his career, Max conducted searches in the metro Boston area and in Worcester County as a member of the CEMLEC. Max helped find missing people and those wanted by police. Here at the DOC, Max was invaluable while conducting patrol and searches. We thank Max for his loyal service to the DOC.?
