This week MAMH celebrated former Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy's new book "Profiles in Mental Health Courage" at the UMass Club in Boston. Former Congressman Kennedy not only tells the stories of people living with mental health conditions, but also the stories of parents, siblings, therapists, coworkers, doctors, and friends who create the extended families needed to support care and wellness. "Sense of community and social connection is imperative to our mental health and well being."

Supported decision-making allows adults, including those with disabilities and older adults, to maintain their rights, dignity, and independence by choosing one or more trusted supporters to assist in making decisions about their lives.
We have some exciting news! As part of our Racial Equity and Supported Decision-Making Initiatives, CPR worked alongside community partners to pilot trainings on SDM and other alternatives to guardianship for family members and people with intellectual and developmental disabilities within underrepresented and underserved populations in Massachusetts. We couldn’t have done it without our amazing partners, Conexiones Latinx- MA, Black Autism Coalition, Cambodian Mutual Assistance Association, Parent/ Professional Advocacy League, The Arc of Greater Haverhill-Newburyport and Autism509. Together, we worked to make SDM more available to linguistically, ethnically and culturally diverse communities in Massachusetts through workshops and accompanying training resources. We learned so much from our partners along the way, including the importance of collaborating with community members and leaders, centering the voices of families and people with disabilities, creating culturally and linguistically accessible educational materials that are available in multiple modalities, and more. This project is just the beginning – more work needs to be done to make SDM more accessible to underserved and underrepresented communities. Thank you to Massachusetts Developmental Disabilities Council, whose financial support made this work possible. Interested in learning more? Check out our website to read the full report in English or Spanish at https://lnkd.in/eXdz6qk8. We’ll be posting more highlights about the project and each training over the next few weeks, so stay tuned!
