Join MASS MoCA's Director of Public Programs Lisa Dent on March 15 for Representation & the Public Record, a full day convening of artists, historians, and designers to draw out the intersection of two key themes: how individuals and groups are represented in public discourse, media, and institutions, and the role of public records in shaping this representation. The day will include presentations and conversations with artists delving into practical aspects of investigative journalism, archival research methods, and data analysis. Presenters include interdisciplinary MASS MoCA exhibiting artists Jeffrey Gibson, Steve Locke and Nate Young, Bilal Ansari, AVP of for Campus Engagement at Williams College, Brooklyn-based visual artists Chitra Ganesh and Miriam Ghani, Seattle-based artist Heather Hart, Michael Hartman and Jami Powell from the Hood Museum of Art, and Williams College student leader Harryson Ferreira. https://lnkd.in/gX_EX4we

关于我们
In May 2024, MASS MoCA will celebrate its 25th anniversary under its new Director, Kristy Edmunds, not only as a contemporary art museum and performing arts venue, but also as a creative campus with a regional, national and global impact. MASS MoCA is one of the world’s liveliest centers for making and enjoying today’s most evocative art. With vast galleries and a stunning collection of indoor and outdoor performing arts venues, MASS MoCA is able to embrace all forms of art: music, sculpture, dance, film, painting, photography, theater, and new, boundary-crossing works of art that defy easy classification. From its beginnings as the major textile mill Arnold Print Works in the mid-19th century, to its days as the Sprague Electric Company in the mid-20th century, to its current iteration as a globally renowned contemporary art museum and fabrication center, the 16-acre MASS MoCA campus has a rich history of serving as the economic engine of the city of North Adams and the surrounding region. "Driscoll, who was elected to her current position?alongside Governor Maura Healey in 2022, said there’s just something about 'the 413' — referencing the area code — that is special. "You just automatically breathe the minute you get there. The air seems cleaner, the people seem nicer, and the geography is breathtaking,' Driscoll said." Thanks Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll for the MASS MoCA, FreshGrass, and 413 shoutout! https://lnkd.in/dHScS8Q8

Today, Congressman Richard Neal announced a $17.3m federal grant award from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s RAISE program. The award will fund complete planning, design, and permitting for the “Adventure to Ashuwillticook Trail,” or “A2A Trail Project”, a 9.3-mile stretch of shared use pathway connecting the existing Ashuwillticook Rail Trail to the Williamstown Mohican Path by way of downtown North Adams and the rotary of the MASS MoCA campus. The landmark grant award is the result of a collaborative effort involving Berkshire Funding Focus, a government funding initiative of the BERKSHIRE REGIONAL PLANNING COMMISSION (BRPC), along with three municipalities: Adams, North Adams, and Williamstown, as well as MASS MoCA and TOURISTS hotel. BRPC will coordinate the ongoing partnership and manage the grant award over the course of the four-year process. We are proud to have been a part of realizing this goal. See you on the bike path ???? Read the full release: https://lnkd.in/gFuTr5wx #InTheBerkshires #BerkshireOutside #MASSdcr

Thank you Hyperallergic for naming The Plastic Bag Store one of the "Top 50 Exhibitions Around the World in 2024". It was an incredible partnership with artist Robin Frohardt and Pomegranate Arts in association with Williamstown Theatre Festival that spanned over 147 days and 320 performances and welcomed over 8600 'most valued customers' through its doors while at MASS MoCA. The multimedia experience used humor, craftsmanship, and a critical lens to question our culture of consumption and convenience — specifically, the enduring effects of single-use plastics. We are forever changed for the better. https://lnkd.in/enzh4BSv

Thank you Andy Battaglia for joining us on our joyous Opening Weekend Celebration for Jeffrey Gibson: POWER FULL BECAUSE WE'RE DIFFERENT. ARTnews ---------- “My daughter looked up at me one day and said, ‘Dada, sometimes your body changes and you forget your dreams. That phrase became a backbone of this whole exhibition—especially when the term two-spirit came in, which, for me, is inclusive of the entire spectrum of genders and sexualities but also different facets of being a spiritual person... It also took me back to when I was a teenager and knew I was gay, but also felt really empowered and fearless of change. As you get older, there’s something about change that becomes frightening, but I want to reconnect to feeling empowered [while] facing unknown factors. It seems like the thing we all have to be able to do right now is to move forward in the face of the unknown." - Jeffrey Gibson https://lnkd.in/gFh3h4yA

Happy 50th Anniversary to Willamette Week, the Portland, OR award-winning alt-weekly newspaper. Check out their celebration of 50 people, places and things that made Portland a better place including MASS MoCA's Director Kristy Edmunds who founded Portland Institute for Contemporary Art (PICA) in 1995. We love reading about this community of trailblazers that supported how creativity is fostered, how ideas flourish, and how people can take charge of their destiny and work to make the world more insprired. We at MASS MoCA understand the ways in which the arts and humanities are central to the road ahead in this country. We believe that the explorations of artists show us something not only about who we are, but about who we can be, and affirm the values that the art we present displays. Our doors are open to anyone looking for a place for contemplation, connection, and inspiration.
