Due to a nationwide IV fluid shortage caused by Hurricane Helene, Mass General Brigham regrettably must defer additional scheduled procedures. While we’ve received additional shipments, our current supply is still limited and our projected deliveries of fluids are still insufficient to meet the full demands for care across our system. Thanks to the extraordinary conservation and response efforts of our clinicians and staff, we remain confident in our ability to safely care for all patients who require our immediate care. We will continue to keep you updated as our response continues.

There are four new permanent art pieces in the waiting rooms of Mass General Brigham Bridge Clinics. Created by local Native American artists, the artwork centers on the theme of healing and welcomes individuals beginning their journey to recovery from alcohol or drug addiction. “Overdose death rates are highest amongst American Indian communities in Massachusetts and far too little attention has been focused on this devastating disparity," says Sarah Wakeman, MD, senior medical director for Substance Use Disorder. “In one of our first meetings with Native American LifeLines of Boston, Dr. Wakeman and I listened to Site Director Nichol Brewer-Lowry, MSc, discuss ways we could be more welcoming to the American Indian community, including through artwork," said Ellen Bell, MBA, MPH, director of Community Health Outreach and Training Programs. With support from The Outreach Program with Native American Communities, Mass General Brigham held an art competition, selecting four final pieces to commission. "We are deeply thankful to these talented artists and Nichol for partnering with us, allowing us to listen and learn, and helping us improve our physical spaces," said Dr. Wakeman. “As a Native woman, creating these artworks held deep personal significance for me," said Quincy Harding, Herring Pond Tribe of Plymouth, one of the selected artists. "It allowed me to honor my heritage and bring cultural representation to spaces that serve marginalized communities. It means the world to me to contribute something that can uplift and empower others, especially in environments that are working to break down barriers in healthcare and support our communities.” Photo 1 Artist, Quincy Harding, with her piece at Brigham and Women's Hospital Bridge Clinic in Boston, MA Photo 2 Artist: Tracey Leigh Adams, Aquinnah Tribe Pictured: Team at Mass General Brigham Community Physicians Bridge Clinic in Haverhill, MA Photo 3 Artist: Robert Peters, Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe Pictured: Team at Massachusetts General Hospital Bridge Clinic in Boston, MA Photo 4 Artist: Quincy Harding, Herring Pond Tribe of Plymouth Pictured: Team at Salem Hospital Bridge Clinic in Salem, MA with Quincy

We had a great time at the 5th Annual Deatrich Wise Block Party in Mattapan last week! Our Community Care Van team partnered with Massachusetts Eye and Ear to provide essential health information and services at this family-friendly community gathering, hosted by the Josh Kraft Mattapan Teen Center. This year’s celebration featured local musicians, healthy eats, and plenty of fun—all headlined by New England Patriots defensive end, Deatrich Wise. Our Chief Community Health & Health Equity Officer, Elsie Taveras, MD, MPH, joined New England Patriots Foundation President Josh Kraft, and colleagues at Boston Medical Center (BMC)—VP of Mission, Thea L. James, MD, MBA, and VP for Community Engagement & External Affairs, Petrina Martin—helping to raise awareness about the critical health issues facing the Mattapan community. The Community Care team was on-site providing blood pressure and A1C checks, flu and COVID vaccines, while our Mass Eye And Ear team offered vision and hearing screenings. Special thanks to Patriots EVP of Football Business, Robyn Glaser, for helping make this event a success. Thanks to all who came out for a day filled with health, community, and connection.

As healthcare providers across the country continue to confront the national IV fluid shortage following the devastating effects of Hurricane Helene, Mass General Brigham has made the difficult decision to defer some non-emergent, elective procedures requiring certain IV fluids from Sunday, October 13, through at least Wednesday, October 16. While we strive to minimize any impact on patients, these measures will ensure we are able to care for those in immediate need. Due to the unpredictable nature of this situation, we do not know when our supply of IV fluids will improve but we are closely monitoring and will continuously evaluate to ensure we can return to normal operations as soon as possible. We are contacting affected patients and will work to reschedule them as soon as we are able.
