Extreme weather events may be becoming more intense due to climate change. As the atmosphere warms, heavy precipitation increases, but the relationship between less common wind events and climate change is still not fully understood. Thunderstorm wind gusts, for example, are more localized than rainfall from severe storms, making them harder to observe and model. In a 2023 study published in *Nature Climate Change*, researchers analyzed trends related to thunderstorm wind events in the U.S. over the past 40 years, including derechos, downdrafts, and other damaging straight-line wind events. #Wildfires in North Carolina's Polk County have grown rapidly, forcing mandatory evacuations as emergency crews battle multiple blazes in a region still recovering from Hurricane Helene. By Sunday night, three wildfires in Polk County had scorched nearly 2,500 acres. Two large fires covered over 1,000 acres each, with no containment, while a smaller fire spanning 150 acres was partially contained. Other active fires were reported in Burke, Madison, and Stokes counties. In nearby South Carolina, the governor declared an emergency due to a growing fire in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The tornado outbreak that hit 13 states on Friday and Saturday of last week caused at least 26 fatalities amid widespread damage to homes and businesses. This marks the deadliest tornado event since the March 31 - April 1, 2023 outbreak, which claimed 27 lives. As of Wednesday morning, March 19, the National Weather Service (NWS) had confirmed 100 tornadoes, including 3 EF4 and 9 EF3 tornadoes, during that storm. The current approach to managing severe convective storm risk is flawed. Most models use stochastic methods to assess maximum loss scenarios but lack precision in estimating average annual losses at the property level. These models don't account for the cumulative nature of #haildamage over time, treating it as a result of a single event rather than ongoing effects. This leads insurers to be reactive, responding to storms rather than proactively anticipating them. After a major hailstorm, they often reassess rates across broad areas, which fails to address the core risk and creates negative consequences. A new AI-powered analysis reveals that $2.15 trillion in U.S. residential property is at high #wildfirerisk. The study, covering 126 million homes, found 4.3 million are at significant risk, extending beyond traditionally vulnerable areas. A strong winter storm is set to hit much of the country this week, bringing #severeweather weather and potential power outages to millions. Southern states are also at risk of #wildfires due to rising winds and temperatures. The storm will move through the southern and central Plains on Monday, reach the Midwest on Tuesday, and hit the Great Lakes by Wednesday, impacting nearly two dozen states. The National Weather Service warns of up to 12 inches of snow in the Sierra Nevada and up to 24 inches in higher areas of the Great Basin and Rockies. Strong winds may lead to blizzard conditions, making travel hazardous. The storm will affect 170 million people, with winds up to 70 mph, causing power outages from Texas to Oklahoma, Florida, and the Northeast. Last year, natural disasters caused $350 billion in #insurance losses, and insurers are now at a critical crossroads: adapt or fail.
