Workplace culture is a complex topic and likely has as many definitions as it has facets. In simple terms, workplace culture is about how we collaborate and cooperate as human beings. At Maslow Research Center (MRC), we understand workplace culture as a construct with three facets:
?? Culture as a North Star – Inspirational culture?
?? Culture as Employee Experience – Lived culture?
? Culture as an Operational Fabric – Operational culture?
?
Many leaders naturally focus on the mission, vision, and values of their organization and often disregard operational culture as part of workplace culture. We developed the Culture Levers? framework to address this gap. If you are a coach who has worked with wheels and scaling in your practice, this should be a familiar sight.?
?? In short, scaling is a subjective way of calibrating how an individual or group thinks about a certain topic. Scaling can help facilitate strategic thinking by identifying a starting point and a target for change.?
? Wheels are used as visual scaling tools. They help identify different areas and facets of a topic, visualize their assessment, and facilitate dialogue.?
Our Culture Levers? framework makes use of these techniques to help executives and senior leaders identify gaps and focus areas in their operational culture. We work with eight operational levers that influence workplace culture and that typically fall within the circle of influence of executive and senior management.
Facilitating a conversation around the eight operational levers of strategy, structure, governance, leadership, people, processes, policies & procedures, and systems empowers leaders to shape the system. It facilitates dialogue and creates alignment between core ideas and a shared vision and goals.?
This is a powerful tool for Organizational Culture Coaching. In our Certified Executive Culture Coaching (CECC) program, we equip coaches and leaders with team and group coaching skills and enable them to facilitate Culture Levers? workshops with executive teams.?
Here’s what a graduate from our fall 2023 cohort said about the program:
“I thoroughly enjoyed the Executive Culture Coaching Course. The exchange of knowledge and learning with other participants was truly beneficial. The tools and techniques were conveyed in an engaging and fun way. Tim is a highly competent facilitator and I take away so many new inputs that will add to my coaching skillset!” –Verena von Rennenberg
