As part of her testimony, Vice Chairwoman Cluff called for the State Commission on Capitol Preservation and Restoration to include in its planning the removal of the statue of John Mason from its prominent position on the fa?ade of the State Capitol building. Mason led the attack at the Mystic Massacre in 1637, where hundreds of Pequot men, women, and children were burned alive or killed as they fled. His actions marked the beginning of what the 1638 Treaty of Hartford formalized as an attempt to eradicate the Pequot people through enslavement, exile, and cultural elimination. The Vice Chairwoman testified that that the Mason statue should be moved to the Old State House, where it can be part of an educational exhibit that tells the full story of his role in Connecticut history—including his leadership in the Mystic Massacre – and acknowledging the genocide that was attempted. MPTN is grateful for Senator Cathy Osten’s sponsorship of these bills, the work of GAE Committee in carefully considering these important matters, as well as House Democratic Majority Leader Jason Rojas and State Representative Geraldo Reyes for sponsoring HB 6040. Kutaputush (Thank you)!

Congratulations to Tribal Member Makayla Mora on winning the American Indigenous Business Leaders (AIBL) Elevator Pitch Competition at this year’s RES conference presented by the National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development (NCAIED). ? Makayla presented an innovative business idea - an App that is designed to strengthen the connection between generations through the continuation of Native language. The App, available on any iPhone or Android, will increase awareness of Native culture but also ensure that valuable histories and traditions are passed down. It will serve as a bridge to preserve language, encouraging younger generations to embrace and carry forward the rich cultural heritage of their ancestors. The judges agreed, it is a fantastic business idea!

Last week Chairman Butler and Councilor Scott attended NCAI’s Executive Council Winter Session 2025 and the annual State of Indian Nations Address. The 2025 Executive Council Winter Session is the annual meeting of the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) Executive Council and presented an opportunity for Tribal leaders from across the country to hear from members of Congress and the Administration during this critical time. The goal was to further the government-to-government relationship between Tribal Nations and the federal government. Photos: 1.
