U.S. Department of the Treasury Issues Proposed Guidance to Clarify Wholly-Owned Tribally Chartered Entities Are Not Subject to Income Tax and Expand Tribal Access to Clean Energy Tax Credits “Today’s proposed regulations from the Department of the Treasury and the IRS signify a pivotal moment for tribal economic development,” said Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation Chairman Rodney Butler, President of NAFOA (founded as the Native American Finance Officers Association). Chairman Butler is also a member of the Treasury Tribal Advisory Committee (TTAC), where NAFOA serves as a technical advisor. “These regulations recognize the importance of Tribal economies and Tribal sovereignty and demonstrate the value of meaningful Tribal consultation and the essential work of the TTAC and its advisors.” https://lnkd.in/eWk-NkCS

September 21st, 2024, marked the 386th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Hartford (1638) and the official end of the Pequot War. In 1637, few Pequots survived the Pequot Massacre—a genocidal attempt widely described as the first prolonged battle between Natives and Europeans on what is now known as the United States. The Pequots’ encounter with the Europeans is one of the most crucial yet most overlooked aspects of American history. The Treaty of Hartford was signed in 1638, shortly after the massacre, marking the end of the Pequot War. The Treaty sought to strip surviving Pequots of their identity and connection to their ancestors and land through enslavement with rival tribes and other manners of displacement and ultimately declared the Tribe “extinct”. After successfully petitioning the Connecticut Colony, enslaved Pequot survivors were given land at Noank in 1651. Eventually, upon realizing the land value of Noank for the thriving whaling industry, the Colony retracted its offering, and a new reservation was established inland in 1666 at present-day Mashantucket—the longest continually occupied Indian reservation in North America. Despite many hardships, [We], the Pequot people persevered and remain today.

Today, on a gorgeous sunny day, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation hosted the 19th Annual Drive Out Diabetes Golf event at the spectacular Lake of Isles, managed by the Tribal Members and KemperSports. The event raises funds and provides support to organizations across America to prevent, reverse, and manage diabetes. Foxwoods Resort Casino supports this event since inception and now the event also has additional support from the Tribe’s Wondr Nation team. Our 19th Annual Driving Out Diabetes golf tournament was held yesterday and it was a huge success!
