Chandra Bhat examines the link between extreme heat and transportation usage in a new collaborative study by teams at the University of Texas and Arizona State University. Read more here:
Have you ever noticed that there's just so much traffic when it's hot outside? Does going home take 15 to 20 minutes, but it takes up to 45 minutes instead? ???? A study by The University of Texas at Austin and the Arizona State University/School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment engineers found that extreme heat can change daily routines and travel habits. During extreme heat, people tend to stay inside more, avoid outdoor activities and shift to traveling during cooler times of the day, like early mornings and evenings. While car usage increases, walking, biking, and public transit drop, affecting lower-income communities more as they often rely on these methods. Congrats to Magi Richani- she is the 2024 recipient of our Outstanding Young Alumni Award! Richani developed a plant that has been genetically modified to produce casein, a key dairy protein found in milk. This protein is extracted and used to formulate more sustainable alternatives to traditional dairy. Read more about Richani on our website: https://lnkd.in/ekcMCC_Y

Earlier this month, sixteen teams of CAEE students faced off to create the ultimate sustainable dog house! These teams had to construct a safe and structurally sound dog house using recycled and reused materials, with the added challenge of incorporating "green" features like living roofs or solar panels. On April 5th, these teams showcased their hard work to a panel of judges and fellow students. Ultimately, four teams were chosen as finalists based on their aesthetic design, construction quality, and overall sustainability.
