Delays caused by prior authorization are a growing problem that leave frustrated patients stuck waiting for medical care their doctors say they need. The problem is it has now morphed into requiring paperwork for very routine medications, routine imaging, routine care and it causes significant delays in treatment,” said Dr. Williams, president of the Medical Association. “Usually it can take days to get a response and often it will just be a denial and require an appeal and then take even longer. Dr. Amanda Williams, President of the Medical Association of the State of Alabama, recently spoke out on Alabama Public Television’s Capitol Journal about a new campaign to reduce delays in patient care caused by prior authorizations. “You have a patient who has just come in and they’re excited to feel better. They’re finally getting the treatment that they need or the diagnostic test that they need and then they’re hit with more delays,” Dr. Williams said of prior authorization requirements. “From a patient’s perspective, it can be very disheartening.” In response, the Medical Association and a coalition of health care partners has launched a new online platform— www.ALFixPriorAuth.com —where Alabamians can share their stories of prior authorization roadblocks. Gov. Kay Ivey has appointed Medical Association Board of Censors member, Brittney Anderson, M.D., to the board of trustees of the Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences. The newly established school will be located in Demopolis and offer Alabama students a high school experience that trains them to enter an in-demand medical career or to pursue higher education after graduation. The Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences is slated to open in the fall of 2026. “It is an honor to be appointed by Gov. Ivey to the Board of Trustees. Her leadership in establishing this school is a pivotal step toward addressing the healthcare challenges of our state. This school will not only provide essential training for the next generation of healthcare professionals but also offer life-changing opportunities for Alabama’s youth. Public health experts from some of the nation’s leading research institutions have deployed a massive medical trailer to rural parts of the South to test and survey thousands of local residents. The goal: to understand why the rates of heart and lung disease are dramatically higher there than in other parts of the U.S. The researchers aim to test the heart and lung function of roughly 4,600 residents of 10 counties and parishes in Alabama, Kentucky, Louisiana and Mississippi while collecting information about their environments, health history and lifestyles.
