A Message from Dr. Mark Lombardi, president of Maryville University: Dear Maryville Community, As we approach June 19th, I want to take a moment to acknowledge the significance of Juneteenth, a profoundly important day in American history. On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, General Gordon Granger and Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce and enforce the emancipation of enslaved African Americans who had not been informed of their freedom. This marked the true end of slavery in the United States, sparking celebrations among newly freed African Americans that laid the foundation for the Juneteenth tradition. Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) stands as a testament to the resilience and strength of the African American community. This day also offers a unique opportunity to reflect on our nation's history, recognize the progress made, and recommit ourselves to the work that still lies ahead. In recognition of Juneteenth, the university will be closed on June 19th. I encourage all members of our campus community to use this day not only as a time for rest and reflection but also as an opportunity to engage in meaningful activities that foster understanding. I urge you to seek out opportunities to learn more about the history of civil rights and the ongoing efforts to achieve racial equity.
