This represents what I’ve been working on for the last month. This represents planning and teaching future professional technicians how to work together to plan, prepare, and put together a set. This represents teaching communication, reading plans, shop mathematics, time management, project management, shop safety, material measurement, cost analysis, use of power tools, safe construction, dealing with kerf, thickness, square, warp, torque, flush, and actual vs nominal size. This represents class time and lab hours and volunteers. This represents learning and doing things for the first time, and that you don’t get it right the first time, and that you have to fix it because someone has to be safely on it. This represents pre-drill, and working the screw gun slowly and assembling in a few turns instead of one and done. This represents reusing “scrap” and saving (lots of) money by recycling. This represents commitment to process and pride in the product and that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts and that it takes everyone to make something greater than ourselves. This represents follow-thru and focus and the fellowship that comes because you need at least two in the sawdust to safely and successfully do it. This represents Theatre In Our Schools, not just for the one month the arts are given, but for the lifelong lessons and impact building these platforms will mean in their lives even if they choose a different profession. This represents the moment where they figured out who they might be while using the pencil, ruler, drill, saw, or broom in their hands. This represents what I have done with my life for the last 25 years. And I wouldn’t change it for anything.
