Proactively expressing gratitude to your team amplifies employees feeling seen, supported, and valued. The timing of expressing gratitude, specifically leveraging "anticipatory gratitude," proves to be impactful thanks to the extensive research by Olivia (Mandy) O'Neill, an associate professor of management at George Mason University – Costello College of Business, and Hooria Jazaieri, assistant professor of management, at Santa Clara University. Through their research, including an analysis of a top U.S. hospital’s intensive care units, O'Neill and Jazaieri found expressing gratitude to others?before?they engage in a distressing task helps counteract some of the negative emotions associated with the task. We understand many healthcare leaders, especially those new to leadership, have not pursued prior education in accounting or finance, yet are expected to create and manage their budget, explain variances and ultimately tell the story behind their numbers. This week we were on-site with a member organization to facilitate a customized Finance & Budgeting leadership development session as part of our on-site Management Boot Camp series.
