  • In celebration of American Education Week, the CHAMPS Program, in conjunction with the Juveniles Services Education Program (JSEP), held its 27th Annual Oratorical Contest on Wednesday, November 20, 2024 at the Montgomery County Circuit Courthouse in Rockville, MD. Youth finalists from DJS facilities throughout Maryland competed to win first, second, and third place prizes. The preparation phase consisted of teachers and staff helping students prepare an original speech based on the Man Who Thinks He Can poem by Walter D. Wintle and to develop public speaking skills. A panel of judges selected the winners based on their presentation and writing skills. First and third prize winners were two young men from Cheltenham Youth Detention Center, while second place was won by a young woman from Western Maryland Children's Center. Congratulations to all the winners and finalists for their hard work! The Man Who Thinks He Can (? Walter D. Wintle) If you think you are beaten, you are If you think you dare not, you don’t, If you like to win, but you think you can’t It is almost certain you won’t. If you think you’ll lose, you’re lost For out of the world we find, Success begins with a fellow’s will It’s all in the state of mind. If you think you are outclassed, you are You’ve got to think high to rise, You’ve got to be sure of yourself before You can ever win a prize. Life’s battles don’t always go To the stronger or faster man, But soon or late the man who wins Is the man who thinks he can. #CHAMPS #oratorical #YouthAwards #AmericanEducationWeek

  • DJS Human Resources (HR) Officer and unit Supervisor Keyia Ward, Jakiraman Jones, Katrina Malone, Alex Rhiane, Nicole Jones, Christine Walls and other HR staff members had an amazing turnout while representing DJS during the Fall ‘24 State Job Fair that was recently held at the 5th Armory Regiment Armory in Downtown Baltimore. Featuring #Marylandstate agencies, 4,000 Marylanders registered to attend and our DJS team was ready with incredible #careeropportunities, offering excellent state benefits. Those in attendance had the opportunity to ask questions that our dedicated DJS #HRteam happily answered, providing a complete overview and guidance of the current opportunities with the Department and its mission to serve the youth, many of them even had the opportunity to interview while at the fair, as our Human Resources team conducted interviews on the-spot. #DJSjobs #jobs #MDJobFair

  • DJS facilities throughout Maryland held events and activities in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. At the Western Maryland Children's Center (WMCC), the young women collaborated with James Twigg of the Creative Arts & Technology Program on designing Breast Cancer Awareness t-shirts. They also participated in a discussion about breast cancer and the importance of early detection, sharing personal stories of how the disease has impacted their lives. Similarly, youth at the Backbone Mountain and Green Ridge Youth Centers worked with James Twigg and Kiara Disimone to create Breast Cancer Awareness t-shirt designs. They too discussed the effect of breast cancer on their lives. The Baltimore City Juvenile Justice Center (BCJJC) held its second annual Breast Cancer Walk, with both staff and youth taking part, as part of its ongoing efforts to educate about breast cancer and show support for all those affected by it. At the Charles H. Hickey, Jr. School, staff and youth walked 2.5 miles around the track for a Breast Cancer Awareness Youth & Staff Fundraiser Walk, followed by a friendly softball game. The youth also made t-shirts and bracelets to support Breast Cancer Awareness. Lower Eastern Shore Children's Center (LESCC) staff and youth participated in a 1K walk and donated funds to support a staff member's loved one battling breast cancer. Nurse Suzanne DiVito from the Wicomico County Health Department visited the young women to discuss breast cancer awareness, health, and wellness topics while LESCC's Nurse Park spoke to the young men about breast cancer, its symptoms, and other valuable information. Youth and staff at the Cheltenham Youth Detention Center worked with both James Twigg of the Creative Arts & Technology Program and Recreation Specialist Wiseman to create unique Breast Cancer Awareness and tie-dye t-shirts. They also joined in a brisk track walk that ended at a colorful finish line. Overall, it was heartening to see DJS facilities across Maryland unite youth and staff in support of Breast Cancer Awareness through a variety of impactful events and activities. #BreastCancerAwareness #BreastCancer2024 #ThinkPink
