The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, observed on March 21st, carries profound weight, especially when considering the justice system. This date marks the anniversary of the Sharpeville Massacre, which occurred on March 21, 1960, in South Africa. During this tragic event, South African police fired upon unarmed Black South Africans protesting apartheid's pass laws, resulting in 69 deaths and approximately 180 injuries. This horrific event serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of racial discrimination and systemic oppression. Within DJS, these inequities often manifest in disproportionate arrests, harsher sentencing, and limited access to rehabilitative resources for youth of color. Recognizing this, the observance of March 21st becomes a crucial moment for agencies to critically examine their practices, policies, and the implicit biases that perpetuate these disparities. It's a call to action to move beyond surface-level reforms and engage in deep, transformative work aimed at dismantling the systemic racism that undermines the potential of countless young lives.
