Our next #LegislativeReceptionRecap dives into one of the biggest challenges facing utility consumers in Maryland – rising demand for energy. Throughout the event, attendees heard perspectives from ratepayers and providers. From the ratepayer perspective, #energydemand in #Maryland is at an all-time high, and costs continue to rise as a result of increased distribution rates and the need to import from other states to meet demand. It was emphasized that natural load growth is expected, and not Maryland ratepayers’ issue to resolve. To ease the burden on consumers, lower-cost, low-regret mitigation solutions, including demand response programs, energy efficiency, grid-enhancing transmission technologies, increased deployment of distributed energy resources (DERs), and cost-effective large-scale energy storage were suggested as solutions. From the provider's perspective, easing the burden of increased energy demand is a top priority. In addition to diversifying energy production sources in Maryland, regional transmission organizations are exploring new methods and infrastructure to transmit power to help reduce costs for ratepayers. As energy demand continues to rise, we applaud the consumer advocates working to lower costs for Marylanders and the providers for working to deliver innovative solutions to meet the needs of its ratepayers.
