Main Street will face an uphill battle if the Federal Reserve, FDIC and OCC impose new banking rules that will add costs and reduce access to loans for small businesses in our area. The Basel III Endgame rule would stifle local innovation and hinder the ability of small businesses to launch and grow. Congress must urge regulators to scrap Basel III Endgame and prioritize the health of our nation’s small businesses. Did you know that roughly 33% of Maryland residents are affected by hunger or food insecurity? With this alarming statistic in mind, the Maryland Chamber of Commerce is once again proud to partner with the Maryland Food Bank to help fight hunger in our communities. We are hosting a food drive aimed at collecting needed food items, as well as $2,500 in monetary donations to help provide nutritious meals for food-insecure children and families across Maryland. Maryland ranked a disappointing 49th for ???job growth at 0.6% in June 2024, adding just 17,200 non-agricultural jobs. Maryland also placed poorly for its three-year compound growth rate, ranking 48th. Low job growth may indicate that businesses are cautious about investing here due to high operational costs, taxes, or a regulatory environment that is not conducive to growth, combined with a talent bottleneck and an overall lack of business friendliness that ultimately weakens state revenues and limits economic resilience.
