URGENT REQUEST: Maryland's youth in foster care need your help! Recent changes have put critical funding for Maryland CASA at risk. This funding doesn't just support foster children – it powers a statewide network of affiliated programs that empowers volunteers and staff, making their advocacy possible. What's at stake? ? Training workshops and educational resources that provide on-going training for CASA staff and volunteers to be powerful voices for children ? Technical assistance that helps our local affiliated programs serve more children effectively ? Statewide conferences that bring our CASA community together with other Child Welfare organizations, to share best practices ? Statewide marketing and outreach that helps build awareness and find more dedicated volunteers ? Legislative advocacy that fights for better policies for youth in foster care across Maryland Last year, this network helped our volunteers advocate for 1,000 children statewide. Each child received the support they needed because dedicated staff and volunteers had the training and backing of a statewide organization. Every day, children enter Maryland's foster care system without anyone to speak up for them. Maryland CASA volunteers become these children's voices, ensuring their needs are heard. Last year, we supported 1,400 children, but our funding is now at risk with the changes in funding from Federal and State government. Children with CASA volunteers spend less time in foster care, perform better in school, and find permanent homes faster. Important Update for Our Nonprofit Community Partners, Friends, Donor's, Sponsors and Advocates: As Maryland CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates for abused and neglected children) Association, we want to draw attention to significant changes affecting the nonprofit sector. The National Council of Nonprofits has released an analysis of recent Executive Orders that impact nonprofit organizations: ? A regulatory freeze pending review is in effect ? Many federal grant programs are under evaluation for reimbursements on already awarded contracts ? Federal agencies have been directed to review funding disbursement processes ? New Federal grants have been paused for review - meaning any non-profit that relies on Federal funding is at risk for the balance of FY25 and into FY26 (or beyond) For organizations like Maryland CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates for abused and neglected children) that partner with federal agencies and receive federal funding, these changes could affect our ability to serve our communities effectively. Key impacts on the nonprofit sector include: ? Potential longer wait times and slower processing for federal grants and contracts; reimbursements are already 90 days in arears ? Changes to federal partnerships and program implementation ? Review of current funding mechanisms, and or termination of Federal funding sources We encourage our nonprofit partners to: 1. Review your organization's funding strategy 2. Stay connected with your state nonprofit association 3. Document program impacts 4.
