It’s Arts, Heritage, and Science Week at the State Capitol! Executive Director Amy K. Behrens, museum Trustee Nancy Leahy, and volunteer Capt. Phill Fossum, USNR, met with legislators yesterday to request funding for urgent conservation of our 100-year old Stonehenge Memorial Monument. This important project will remediate decaying building materials and conserve the monument, listed on the #NationalRegisterOfHistoricPlaces as the first WWI memorial monument in the USA, for the next 100 years. The monument to peace honors all veterans and inspires all visitors, attracting 40,000 people to its site each year. If you’re a resident of WA, let your legislative representatives know how important this project is to our cultural heritage and veterans. It’s also one of the most beloved roadside attractions in the Pacific Northwest. We need your support this legislative session to conserve the Stonehenge Memorial Monument. Thanks to Inspire Washington, Washington State Historical Society, ArtsWA / Washington State Arts Commission, and Washington Museums Association for hosting Arts, Heritage, and Science Week and for their advocacy. Many thanks to Architectural Resources Group and Schommer & Sons for their invaluable research. Photo: Nancy Leahy, Amy Behrens, Senator Curtis King (Washington State Senate 14th District), and Capt. Phill Fossum, USNR.

One of the Pacific Northwest’s most fascinating cultural destinations
关于我们
Maryhill Museum of Art provides a window into the world for its surrounding communities and visitors. The museum was incorporated in 1923 and dedicated by Queen Marie of Romania in 1926. It opened to the public in 1940, and since that time has been a major cultural and arts resource, tourist attraction and historical Northwest landmark, welcoming 20,000 to 30,000 regional, national and international visitors annually. It is open daily, March 15 through November 15. It is closed to the public during the winter at which time exhibit work and building maintenance are done. The museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, governed by an elected Board of Trustees, has a full-time staff of eight, and an average annual operating budget of around $1.2 million. Support for the museum comes from a wide variety of donors in addition to its earned income. Each year the museum presents permanent and changing exhibitions and programs related to its mission. The museum is renowned for its collections that include American, European and American Indian works of art. Its exhibitions, programs and activities receive regional, national, and at times, international attention. The immediate park surrounding the museum offers stunning vistas, informal gardens, a sculpture park, and a Lewis and Clark Overlook and garden. The museum is on the National Register and is a recognized site of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail.

An article about Maryhill Museum of Art's exhibitions "The Columbia River: Wallula to the Sea" and "King Salmon: Contemporary Relief Prints" made the short list of Oregon ArtsWatch's top stories in 2024. The exhibitions “plant the museum firmly in the geology and cultures of its place along the Columbia River," wrote critic Bob Hicks. "So does its expansive permanent collection of Indigenous art, a large part of which is devoted to basketry and beadwork from the Columbia River Plateau.” See all the top stories: https://shr.link/mfa2y

That's a wrap! As we reflect on our 2024 season at Maryhill Museum of Art, we are grateful for everyone whose support as contributors, members, and visitors enabled us to inspire, educate, and enrich lives with art. Maryhill Museum of Art is the sole fine art museum between Portland and Spokane, serving residents of the central Pacific Northwest as well as visitors who make the trek to our museum from many other parts of the world. We look forward to welcoming all of you to our 85th annual opening in March 2025. Thank you again for your support of Maryhill Museum of Art. As a nonprofit organization, we rely heavily on contributions from individuals and businesses. We'll be sharing opportunities to give (and announcing a special match!) soon. #maryhillmuseum #magicofmaryhill Photo credits: @MichaelPetersonPhotography @KrishnaMuirhead @DavidBurbachPhotography

"In a workroom overlooking the Columbia River on Saturday, a few dozen attendees fill two long tables in the Education Center of the Maryhill Museum of Art in Goldendale, Washington, eager to create intricate weaved baskets, called Wa’paas, from crafting cord and yarn using Indigenous techniques. 'Chestina began offering these workshops in October 2023,' said Amy Behrens, Executive Director of Maryhill Museum of Art. “And ... people were coming from over 100 miles away to gather and participate in this workshop.' In today's fast-paced, information-rich world, we passively consume enormous amounts of information. But do our efforts leave us feeling fulfilled... or exhausted? Maryhill Museum of Art participates in Slow Art Day because we believe that a journey of educational enrichment starts with active looking, purposeful interactions, and room to reflect. Slow Art Day is an international movement gaining popularity because it helps us TRULY see and understand. "Neuroscience has confirmed what ancient artists always knew: we see only a tiny fraction of what is around us. To widen the lens and allow more in, we must slow down. And it turns out that slowing down not only helps us see more, but, as mentioned above, it brings with it the joy of discovering more." - From the SlowArtDay.com website Curator of Education Sorcha Meek Paul hosted Maryhill Museum of Art's annual Slow Art Day this April. Read on to find out what we looked at and what participants discovered!
