“It always seems impossible until it’s done” — Nelson Mandela I write this letter knowing full well that I am one of the lucky ones that currently has power. Our hearts go out to everyone still suffering from the aftermath of Hurricane Milton. We obviously had a double dose of disaster between Hurricanes Helene and Milton. From our perspective, Helene brought the water and Milton brought the wind. Our office and shelters suffered wind damage from Milton, and progression was halted on our smaller shelter due to preparations for Milton. We were faced with tree damage at the office, specifically the entrance to the thrift store. I am happy and blessed to report that the compromising trees were removed last night. This would not have been possible without the selflessness of our community members, orchestrated by Diana Walker, CCA, who were gracious enough to hire Pola & Sons Fence and Trees, to have them removed. Thank you to everyone involved. We were frightened at the thought that our thrift store would not be operational on the first day back to it’s normal in-season hours, but I’m happy to announce that the thrift store will be open tomorrow and ready to continue serving our mission. We are still working on our smaller shelter. Mold remediation obviously suffered a set-back, and while pulling the drywall two weeks ago, we discovered this shelter has termites. After remediation has been completed, we will treat for termites. We are still looking for monetary donations to help cover the costs and labor of replacing the cabinets, conducting the mold remediation, covering the residents’ displacement costs, and now, termite treatment. Once those items have been completed we will be looking for donations such as furniture, beds, food, housewares, etc. To those of you who have already donated, we are forever grateful for your support, and with the rest of the community’s help, we still aim to come back stronger and better than ever. It will be a massive challenge, but everyone at MMH is up for the task. It may seem impossible at this point, but we will all look back and marvel at our accomplishments.
