We’re still riding the excitement of NASA JPL’s successful launch of the SPHEREx Space Telescope! Even though we completed our part months ago, when the HERMES Shipping Container left our dock to carry SPHEREx to Vandenburg, that sense of accomplishment never fades. There’s nothing quite like rolling a project out the door, knowing it’s about to play a key role in advancing our understanding of the universe. It took hundreds of talented engineers, technicians, planners, and innovators to make this mission a success. A lot of behind-the-scenes preparation takes place before a space vehicle, like the SPHEREx Space Telescope, is ready to explore the cosmos. Final integration, clean room testing, and safe transportation of the telescope to its launch site all need to be accounted for before it can take its place amongst the stars. Mechanical Ground Support Equipment (MGSE), like the HERMES Shipping Container, makes all this possible. The HERMES shipping container is a universal satellite shipping container, which protected SPHEREx from vibrations, contaminants, and temperature fluctuations as it made its way from BAE Systems, to JPL, to Vandenberg. We’re proud to enable our customers with custom MGSE solutions, like the HERMES container and happy to see that SPHEREx made it safely to Vandenberg. Martinez & Turek is thrilled to see JPL put the HERMES shipping container to work! We designed and built this universal satellite shipping container and transport/testing cart for JPL to carry BAE System’s SPHEREx satellite and future satellite payloads from their integration/testing sites all the way to the launch pad. This Mechanical Ground Support Equipment (MGSE) system was designed to securely house and transport the satellite during critical phases, including integration, testing, and final deployment. Given the delicate nature of space-bound instrumentation, our solution incorporated advanced shock absorption, thermal protection and structural reinforcements, to safeguard SPHEREx against environmental stresses and contaminants. The HERMES container features optimized geometries to withstand harsh outdoor conditions over an extended service life. Transport efficiency is achieved by integrating all these critical features into a compact, road-legal package that does not require superload permits. This streamlined design ensures easier logistics while maintaining the highest levels of protection and adaptability for future missions. We implemented a standardized interfacing pattern and a modular shock isolation system, allowing for seamless accommodation of future satellite missions with varying payload characteristics. This forward-thinking approach enhances efficiency in spacecraft logistics, reducing lead times and costs for upcoming projects.
