At Martin Trunnion Tables, we take pride in engineering custom workholding solutions that make machining more efficient and precise. Our latest project? A custom tombstone fixture designed specifically to hold unique forgings for one of our customers. This was no off-the-shelf solution. Our process started with detailed CAD modeling, followed by 3D printing prototypes to validate our design before committing to machining. Once the concept was refined, we moved to production—machining every critical component in-house to ensure maximum accuracy and durability. We recently tackled a challenging workholding project that involved securing and machining complex castings that were originally completed in two separate operations. The customer sought to eliminate repositioning, reduce handling time, and improve overall efficiency. By integrating a 4th-axis rotary table with a custom trunnion solution, we enabled them to machine the entire part in a single handling, significantly streamlining their workflow. However, to ensure precision, repeatability, and secure workholding, we incorporated a combination of Vektek, LLC clamps, Vektek part-sensing components, and custom-developed air gap sensors. Vektek clamps provided robust, adjustable workholding to accommodate the unique shape of the casting. Vektek part-sensing components ensured that each part was properly seated before machining, preventing misalignment. In-house developed air gap sensors offered an extra layer of validation, confirming that the part was fully engaged with the fixture before clamping. This automation-enhanced solution not only eliminated a full operation but also improved cycle times, reduced manual intervention, and enhanced part consistency—delivering a significant competitive advantage for our customer. We recently completed a high-volume tombstone solution for a horizontal machining center, designed to optimize the machining of oddly shaped forgings. Given the irregular nature of these forgings, we developed custom fixtures that provided secure and repeatable positioning while maximizing part density per setup. To address the challenge of accurately locating and securing the parts, we integrated Carr Lane Manufacturing Co. spring locating pins. These pins provide a spring-loaded, self-adjusting clamping force, ensuring consistent workholding even with slight variations in the forging dimensions. This not only reduced setup time but also improved repeatability across high-volume production runs. The tombstones were made from single-piece castings, ensuring high rigidity and durability for continuous operation within a pallet pool system. By leveraging this automated workflow, our customer can run unattended machining cycles, increase spindle uptime, and significantly boost production efficiency. We recently completed a 48-inch-long, double-sided trunnion designed to simplify the machining of complex castings for a customer in the construction industry. Like many manufacturers working with large, irregularly shaped parts, they needed a solution that would eliminate the cumbersome manual repositioning typically required to access all necessary machining angles. One of the biggest challenges with castings is their inherent variability—no two are exactly the same. Traditional fixturing methods struggle to compensate for these inconsistencies, leading to setup headaches, misalignment issues, and inefficiencies on the shop floor. To overcome this, we integrated the AMROK inverted stud ball element, which provides 6 degrees of rotation in any direction during clamping. This adaptive feature allows the fixture to conform to the natural angles of the casting, ensuring a secure hold without distorting the part. By incorporating this technology into our trunnion design, we helped our customer streamline their workflow, improve repeatability, and reduce setup time—allowing them to machine complex castings with greater efficiency and precision.
