Welcome Dolly! A paws-itive new team member joins Child Life team at Marshfield Children’s. The Child Life and Expressive Therapies team welcomed Dolly to Marshfield Children’s Hospital this Monday. Dolly is a specially educated facility dog who will assist her Child Life handler helping pediatric patients cope while at a medical appointment, procedure or during a hospital stay. Dolly comes from Canine Assistants in Georgia, who use a bond-based approach. Marshfield Children’s Hospital is one of only two children’s hospitals in Wisconsin to have a facility dog. This animal-assisted therapy can help patients feel more comfortable and less anxious. Different than pet therapy, Dolly and Child Life are following a goal-directed program that helps patients cope, heal and achieve treatment goals. As Child Life works with patients, they will assess if a child’s care plan would benefit by assistance from Dolly. Marshfield Children’s Hospital facility dog program is funded through donations from Christmas In July Charity. Dolly’s grooming needs are supported by in-kind services and donations by Pet Supply Plus in Marshfield. To support the care of Marshfield Children’s facility dog, donate online at https://lnkd.in/gYCKV-pj, select CMNH and comment “Facility dog.” Checks can be made to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMNH) – Facility Dog and sent to Marshfield Clinic Health System Foundation.

Welcome Dr. David Helland to our family medicine team in Chippewa Falls! He sees patients for routine preventive exams, common illnesses and injuries and helps manage chronic conditions. He has a special interest in geriatric care and complex illnesses or care. As a provider, he wants to personalize his care and time spent with his patients. “I don't focus my attention on a computer," he said. “I sit down with the patient and do most of my notes or research outside of the room." Congrats to this amazing team for bringing cardiac contractility modulation (CCM) therapy to Marshfield Clinic Health System. It is an advanced treatment for patients with heart failure, particularly those who have moderate to severe heart failure but are not candidates for conventional treatments. The therapy was FDA-approved in 2019, however very few medical centers in the country are using this therapy outside of clinical trials. Marshfield Medical Center is the second center in the state now offering this therapy. The procedure is primarily done by cardiac electrophysiologists. To date, Marshfield Medical Center has completed five procedures. CCM works by delivering non-excitatory electrical signals to the heart during the absolute refractory period of the cardiac cycle, which is the phase when the heart muscle is unresponsive to normal electrical stimuli. “It benefits patients with heart failure by improving the heart’s ability to pump blood more efficiently,” said Dr. Weija Wang, electrophysiologist. “We’re excited about this therapy as it represents a relatively new approach in heart failure management, especially for patients who fall into a treatment gap where standard options are ineffective.”
