?? Global aviation regulations and airworthiness standards don't stand still, so neither do we. ???We've constantly stayed at the forefront of the latest developments, from safety and communications protocols to UAVs. ? Applying our vast expert technical and regulatory knowledge, we provide full-fledged testing (both flight and static) and certification to ensure our customers' aircraft are serviceable, airworthy and fit for purpose. ?? This means we're able to independently certify all the work we perform, but we also?offer a third-party advisory service that can take our customers’ products, modifications or systems from design through to real-world operation and beyond. ?? How are some aircraft built in the 1950s still flying? ???? Hint: it's not only due to excellent design and manufacture, or even regular maintenance. ?? Major structural components like centre wing boxes need to be replaced periodically once they approach their operational limits. ?? In the case of a centre wing box, it's the aircraft equivalent of spinal surgery—and?we're proud to be one of the few organisations trusted to perform these delicate operations on C-130s. ?? We've put together a page all about centre wing box replacements: why they're necessary, how they help fleet operators, and why we've been recognised as leaders in this area. ??? The C-130J Super Hercules is the worldwide choice in tactical airlift—and we've been part of its story since day one. ?? While the J model was still in development, Lockheed Martin tasked Marshall with testing its new Allison 2100D engine and Dowty 6-bladed propeller, modifying an existing RAF C-130K for extensive flight trials. ? We then supported the entry into service of the RAF's C-130J fleet of 25 aircraft between 1998 and 2001, including painting and extensive engineering work such as fitting refuelling probes. ?? Demonstrating the Super Herc's capability, one of the aircraft being delivered carried?a 34,000 lb payload nonstop and unrefuelled from Pope AFB in North Carolina to our HQ in Cambridge. The crew set a handful of world aeronautical records during the flight, which covered a distance of 3,403 nautical miles. ?? Decades later, the C-130J has now racked up?over 3 million flight hours with 28 operators worldwide, and we're excited to support the platform as it continues to evolve. ?????The 2025 Sir Arthur Marshall lecture was a masterclass in all things C-130! ?? Aptly titled "Welcome to Herc Country," the lecture was?delivered by?two absolute experts on the world's workhorse: author and former RAF loadmaster/pilot Scott Bateman MBE, and Larry Gallogly from Lockheed Martin (a former USAF and Air National Guard Colonel with 6,000+ C-130 flight hours). ?? Scott and Larry walked us through Herc history, charting 70 years of engineering excellence and human endeavour. They highlighted the factors that have made the platform an enduring success, and its ongoing role in supporting people in critical situations around the world. ?? This was also the 25th Sir Arthur Marshall lecture—a remarkable achievement by the Cambridge branch of the Royal Aeronautical Society!?We're proud to support this highly valuable and informative event series, just as we're proud to support the Herc community around the world. ?? Turning 30 C-130s into C-130-30s: a long short story.??? ?? In the 1970s, the RAF realised their C-130s were always being filled to capacity and decided they needed something a bit larger. Meanwhile, Lockheed Martin was already working on a stretched version that could take a bigger payload. ???Marshall and Lockheed Martin worked together to develop a "stretch" programme for 30 RAF aircraft, cutting up the fuselage and inserting a 100 inch plug for the front section of the aircraft, and an 80 inch section between the wing and the para troop doors.?All the systems and wiring then had to be adapted accordingly. ?? These two sections made the aircraft 15 feet longer and increased their cargo space by more than a third. The first of these "C-130-30" mods (also known as C-130K Mk3) was completed at Lockheed Martin with assistance from Marshall engineers, and delivered to the RAF in 1979. Work on the remaining 29 aircraft took place in Cambridge, with final delivery in 1985. #ProblemSolvers #C130Since1966 #HercWork
