Oregon's EPR Reporting Deadlines Are Here – Are You Ready? With the March 31 deadline looming for reporting single-use packaging (Primary, Secondary, Tertiary) data to the Circular Action Alliance (CAA) portal, registered producers must ensure all single-use transport packaging materials are included. This means that all baled OCC and plastic films must be reported, regardless of whether they were recycled. Failing to account for these materials could lead to compliance issues under Oregon’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program. If your company has recycled qualifying transport packaging materials, there is a separate process for requesting fee relief through Oregon’s Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). Producers seeking an exemption must submit their request by end-of-day, Friday, March 7 and provide documentation proving that the materials were recycled. This includes demonstrating net recycling (total recycled minus contamination). Check Oregon’s website for the exact submission process and ensure your data is complete to meet the exemption criteria. Time is running out! Ensure your company is fully compliant and submit all required reports before the deadlines. Have questions? Engage with the Marrad, The Circular Action Alliance or Oregon DEQ to clarify your reporting responsibilities and exemption opportunities.
The latest California EPR Single Use Packaging (SB-54) update courtesy of Politico: Businesses leaders across California are concerned that they are being set up for failure. Lots of doubt about the ability to achieve a 25% reduction in plastic use by 2032. Other key highlights: Annual fees for producers: CalRecycle estimates up to 13,615 manufacturers could pay around $500?million per year beginning in 2027. (This does not include the incremental $500 million dollars per year that will fund social programs for fence line communities) Industry pushback: Business groups argue the initial rulemaking underestimates compliance costs and does not adequately account for the need to develop or adopt new recycling (chemical recycling) technologies. Imminent deadlines: CalRecycle faces a March?7 deadline to finalize implementation rules. Any delay risks pushing the entire process back, creating potential uncertainty for affected businesses
Congratulations to the entire team at the Circular Action Alliance! The approval of the Oregon EPR (Single Use Packaging) plan is a significant accomplishment on the path toward a more sustainable future. This milestone not only benefits Oregon, but also sets a precedent for everyone dedicated to advancing EPR initiatives for single-use packaging.
?? Exciting News from Circular Action Alliance! ?? We are thrilled to announce that the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has approved the first Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program plan for paper and packaging in the United States! ?? This landmark decision marks a significant step forward in our mission to reduce waste and recycle more. The approved plan, developed by CAA, outlines our approach to managing the end-of-life of packaging, paper products, and food serviceware in Oregon. We are proud to lead the way in implementing #EPR laws in the U.S., which will help reduce waste, improve recyclability, and create a more sustainable future for all. This achievement results from months of collaboration with producers, local governments, service providers, and other interest holders. Thank you to everyone who has supported us on this journey. Together, we are making a difference! ?? #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #Recycling #ExtendedProducerResponsibility #EnvironmentalImpact #CircularActionAlliance
