When explaining Manufacturing to outsiders, I often use the Construction industry as an analogy. Most people have experience or a general grasp of how construction projects work — quoting, materials (standard vs. custom), labor, lead times, etc. And everyone knows one universal truth about Construction: PROBLEMS ARE GUARANTEED. My house has two construction projects going right now, a basement office build-out and a primary bathroom remodel. Truthfully, our satisfaction with the contractor hasn't been sky high so far... Just little things like having to provide specs multiple times, inconsistent progress, etc. But something happened last night that changed everything: Our kitchen ceiling sprung a leak out of nowhere. No work had been done for several hours, and there wasn't any running water to explain it. So naturally this sent us into panic mode (uncontained water is a menace). My wife called the Project Manager around 6 or 6:30pm. And within 20 minutes we had the PM, the plumber, the drywall guy, and the head contractor in our house diagnosing the issue. It turned out to be a small water spill that eventually found a hole, but I was floored by the responsiveness. There's a big social media debate about whether US Manufacturing can compete with China — now or into the future. My contention is that we compete like champions, just in a very selective way. You might not get a same-day quote for every bulk RFQ. But I truly believe that when specialized requirements land at the right US supplier, we can compete with *anyone in the world* on total value. The difference maker is the same one you want in a construction contractor: Fast, effective responses during times of crisis. I realize that many Chinese suppliers can offer this, despite the time zone and communication barriers. But in my experience, it's 20-50 times more likely that a customer walks away unhappy after a problem comes up offshore.
