Now we are going to Ireland! Our next partner is the University of Galway, through the Marine Biodiscovery group. In charge of establishing a National Marine Biomaterial Repository in Ireland they use diving facilities and experience in warm and cold waters to collect marine macro organisms in Ireland primarily and beyond through collaborations to identify them, with a particular focus on sponges, corals and seaweeds. Through this conservation and identification, the biomolecules of each sample are analysed and characterised in order to improve our knowledge in the ecology of the organism and also to find new opportunities in the blue bioeconomy for these new natural chemicals such as in agriculture, cosmetics or therapeutics. The University of Galway participates mostly in the Marine Biotechnology Platforms BP1 and BP3 and have been in charge of preparing the Pilot Projects call together with other partners. They are also the Principal Investigator in the Pilot Project KelPet and have other projects in progress like Dictyota.

Our next partner is also from Spain. The Instituto Espa?ol de Oceanografía was created in 1914 and it's a public research organization dedicated to research in marine sciences, especially in relation to scientific knowledge of the oceans, the sustainability of fishing resources and the marine environment. Since 2021, the IEO is a National Center of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) dependent on the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (ieo.es). The IEO is not limited to carrying out basic and applied research, it also provides scientific and technological advice to administrations in matters related to oceanography and marine sciences and is the investigative and advisory body for the fisheries sector policy of the Spanish Government. In the Marinnonet consortium participates scientific staff based at the oceanographic center of Vigo (NW Spain), from the team of “Harmful algae and plankton ecology” (vgohab.com), participating mostly in the BP2 (Omic and observation technologies for preserving marine biodiversity and restore ocean health) and BP3 (Marine-derived products for industrial applications) Marine Biotechnology Platforms. The Spanish Bank of Algae is a research infraestructure of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria focused on the isolation, characterization, conservation and cultivation of macroalgae, microalgae and cyanobacteria for scientific and technological applications. Available mainly in the scope of the Biotechnological Platform 3 (Marine-derived products for industrial applications), with more than 2000 living algae and cyanobacteria strains in its collection the bank offers unique genetic resources for developing biotechnologies in sectors as energy, health, nutrition or environment. Before having a well-deserving break for holidays, let's continue introducing the consortium! The Centro de Investigación Mari?a (CIM) of University of Vigo is the lead partner in the Marinnonet project. Also the Biotechnology Platform 1 coordinator (BP1 - Innovation for an efficient, sustainable and resilient aquaculture), CIM will contribute its extensive expertise in marine research and the development of innovative solutions for the conservation of marine ecosystems and the promotion of the blue economy. ? CIM will contribute to the design and development of new technologies for marine biodiversity monitoring, as well as the creation of tools to enable more sustainable management of marine resources. Additionally, the center will lead efforts in key areas such as sustainable aquaculture, marine environmental protection, and the development of new products from marine resources. ? Through ECIMAT (Toralla Marine Science Station), CIM provides Marinnonet with its advanced research services, which include: ? - State-of-the-art marine research infrastructure. - Marine monitoring and observation platforms for biodiversity tracking. - Molecular and cellular analysis technologies for assessing the effects of pollutants on marine organisms. - Applied research in sustainable aquaculture and the development of new marine products. - Study and conservation of marine ecosystems, focusing on biodiversity and climate change impacts. ? With its interdisciplinary approach and its ability to generate synergies between research and industry, CIM will play a key role in the transfer of knowledge and the creation of new blue biotechnological solutions that will benefit both science and the local economy. Following the Marinnonet project 2nd progress meeting we had in Bilbao last week, we had the opportunity to visit the facilities of the Plentzia Marine Station of the University of the Basque Country (PiE-UPV/EHU). Available mainly in the scope of the Biotechnological Platform 2 (Omic and observation technologies for preserving marine biodiversity and restore ocean health) but also in the other two on Aquaculture and Marine Products, PiE-UPV/EHU offers access to unique marine ecosystems, marine biological resources, and research platforms to a wide-range of stakeholders.
