The Wildfire Grand Challenge is all about combining technical innovation with local expertise. We just unveiled our Progress Dashboards for Reducing Wildfire Risk at the Climate & Wildfire InstituteTask Force meeting! ?? Why does this matter? ?? After creating a robust, reliable data collection program, it is clear that Marin Wildfire is significantly reducing wildfire risk for Marin residents through vegetation managment. However, more work needs to be done. ?? Vegetation management projects don't last forever, and need to be maintained in order to keep risk low as vegetation continues to grow and die. Vegetation management projects are infrastrucutre, and need maintaince in perpituity in order to remain effective. ?? Vegetation management projects are designed to reduce, not eliminate, an approaching fire. Residents must compliment this work by implementing home hardening and defensible space features in order to stop fire from burning their homes ???? ?? We are proud to share that our community has been selected as a Semi-Finalist in the Conservation X Labs’ Fire Grand Challenge. The Challenge team evaluated our community’s fire management efforts and our potential to co-develop and field-test fire-focused solutions, and they determined that Marin Wildfire has a strong potential to help transform how we manage and live with fire in Western North America. As a Semi-Finalist, we have had the opportunity to connect with technical applicants from across the world who submitted proposals for solutions that bring together Indigenous, rural, and place-based knowledge with technology. We appreciate this vote of confidence in our work, and we are excited for this coming month, when the Finalists will be announced—each receiving $50,000 to advance through field-testing and acceleration. ??
