Taking care of your mental health after a disaster is critical. It’s just as important when you’re responding to one as a Red Cross disaster responder. Thanks to these therapy dogs with HOPE Animal-Assisted Crisis Response organization, our Red Crossers took a moment to reset before tackling another challenging day helping people recover from Hurricane Helene. During these hard times, special visits from these four-legged friends help refuel the mental strength needed to provide hope and relief to people going through unimaginable loss. “Taking a few minutes to unwind and play with a loving dog allows our workforce to take care of themselves, which also helps us better care for communities in need,” said Virginia Mewborn, director for the Red Cross disaster response operation in North and Central Florida. Just like Red Crossers, these HOPE dogs have a mission — to provide comfort, hope and lots of joy to people in need. We’re grateful to work alongside organizations that help communities recover both physically and emotionally. ?? #Helene

This is what a lifesaving collaboration looks like. ???? The American Red Cross Central Florida Region and the South Atlantic Region of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., teamed up to teach nearly 100 sorority members how to perform CPR and other essential first aid skills. This collaboration, which comes during National Minority Health Month, is just one example of how AKA turns compassion into action, empowering and supporting diverse communities. Among the health disparities that disproportionately affect racially and ethnically diverse populations is heart health. Here's how. ?? While more than half of the U.S. population has high blood pressure, racially and ethnically diverse adults have higher rates than adults who are white. Uncontrolled high blood pressure can lead to complications like heart failure. Immediate bystander CPR can double or even triple the chances of survival for individuals experiencing cardiac arrest at home, during meetings and at community events. Training more individuals to have the confidence and skills to act in an emergency can help combat these statistics and help save lives. ??

Tomorrow morning around 10:14 a.m. PST, the moon will pass between the Earth and the sun and a total solar eclipse will trace a narrow path across the entire country. Although the Bay Area is not within the “path of totality” as it’s called (within the area where day will turn to complete darkness), we will still have the opportunity to witness a partial solar eclipse, which means taking precautions to protect your eyes. "Have fun with this exciting experience, but remember safety is the number one priority when viewing a total solar eclipse!" said Carolyn Ho, MD, MPH, of MarinHealth Primary Care in Sonoma. "Be sure you're familiar with the specialized eye protection designed for solar viewing that you need to wear if you plan to view it. Viewing any part of the bright sun through a camera lens, binoculars, or a telescope without a special-purpose solar filter secured over the front of the optics will instantly cause severe eye injury, so please be careful, plan ahead, and enjoy!"
