The MMA is looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Director of Astronomy to advance the organization’s mission of supporting a life-long passion for science through education, research, and firsthand exploration of the sky, land, and sea of Nantucket Island. The Director of Astronomy is the public face of the MMA’s award-winning astronomy research and education activities and serves as the primary connection between the Nantucket community and astronomy public outreach. The successful candidate will oversee the operations of the Vestal Street and Loines observatories, produce strong astronomy-related program offerings, help to manage interns and volunteers, conduct and supervise all MMA research opportunities and lead educational experiences through programs. They will also be responsible for cultivating relationships with constituents and the public at large. This role requires a dynamic individual with excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and provides a unique opportunity to manage our popular observatories, mentor future leaders in astronomy, and build relationships with the Nantucket science community. The Nantucket Maria Mitchell Association (MMA) is looking for an experienced and detail-oriented Finance Director to lead and manage the financial operations of the organization. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Finance Director, will play a key role in ensuring the fiscal health of the MMA, overseeing the financial strategy, reporting, and operations that support MMA’s mission of supporting a life-long passion for science through education, research, and first-hand exploration of the land, sky, and sea of Nantucket Island. The Finance Director will be responsible for managing the MMA’s financial planning, budgeting, accounting, and reporting function. This role requires a skilled professional with a strong financial acumen, excellent organizational abilities, and a commitment to maintaining the integrity of the MMA’s financial operations. ?? Using Data to Help Protect Eelgrass Beds ?? We're excited about deploying our EMM700 buoy with the Maria Mitchell Association, marking a significant step in safeguarding one of New England's last healthy eelgrass beds. Positioned at the mouth of Nantucket Harbor, this buoy has advanced technology, including a YSI EXO3 sonde to monitor crucial water quality parameters in real-time. Why does this matter? Eelgrass beds are vital to our ecosystem, capable of sequestering more carbon dioxide per acre than rainforests. This reduces water acidity, a key factor in preserving marine life like the commercially valuable Nantucket bay scallop. This project is about more than just data collection; it's about using science to drive change. By continuously monitoring seawater acidity, dissolved oxygen, temperature, total algae, nitrates, and salinity, we're helping to ensure the long-term health of these essential marine habitats. Countdown to the Solar Eclipse! ? The Maria Mitchell Association is thrilled to guide our island's safe and enjoyable eclipse viewing experience over the coming days. We are hosting a series of events leading up to the solar eclipse including our first 2024 Stargazing Open Night at Loines Observatory, Astro Story Hour, and a hands-on workshop to prepare for the eclipse. We'll be hosting a special & safe viewing of the upcoming Great North American Eclipse at Nantucket High School retired baseball field. We welcome all student and families to stop by to check out a view of the sun using safe solar viewing tools. There will be different stations and activities for all to enjoy.
