Childbirth is a daunting experience, especially in regions with limited healthcare infrastructure like Somalia. At Margin Innovation, we’ve embraced a human-centered design approach to better understand the real-life challenges faced by pregnant women in such communities. Our recent article by Madeleine Moore shares some examples of what we can learn when we invest in understanding our key audience on a deeper level, and the surprising or nuanced design opportunities that can arise when we do so. The article explores the insights and opportunities identified in Somalia that surround some key strategies for healthcare design: - Building relevance - Making health information understandable - Acknowledging the emotional side of medical care - Getting to the root of the problem By exploring the human side of things, this program can incorporate the nuance of their target audience’s experience and belief system, allowing them to create communication strategies, community-based care mechanisms, and other services that address the woman’s needs and are acceptable and comprehensible. Read the full article to explore the insights and the opportunities that stemmed from this work in Somalia. #MaternalHealth #PublicHealth #HealthcareInnovation #HumanCenteredDesign #ESG #FamilyPlanning #Nutrition #Somalia

  • We are excited to share this insight deck (https://lnkd.in/dEUg3jsZ) with you, focusing on catalysing the market for higher-value eucalyptus furniture products. This project, in collaboration with KCFP, applies a Human-Centered Design (HCD) approach to understand and target young professionals (YPs) in Nairobi. Some quick insights Potential Market Opportunity: Our research suggests a compelling market opportunity for higher-value eucalyptus furniture products, driven by the needs and preferences of young professionals in Nairobi. Human-Centered Design Approach: By leveraging HCD methodologies, we gained deep insights into the psychographics, motivations, and purchase behaviours of YPs, enabling us to design products that align with their values and lifestyles. Social Influence and Sustainability: YPs are heavily influenced by their peers and social media. There is potential to nudge them towards sustainability by aligning furniture products with their social justice-oriented values. Purchase Behaviour and Challenges: Affordability is a major concern for YPs, who often plan and stage their purchases. They value multifunctional furniture pieces and transparent pricing, including delivery costs. Relevance to International Development: The challenges and opportunities identified in this project highlight broader issues within the agricultural and forestry sectors. By understanding consumer behavior and leveraging innovative design methodologies, organizations can drive positive transformations and create sustainable market opportunities. GET IN TOUCH! We are excited to share this insight deck (https://bit.ly/3PjpMyD) with you, which focuses on finding solutions that prioritize the needs of people to encourage the adoption of Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) among tea outgrowers. We have worked closely with Wakulima Tea Co. Ltd (WTC) and AgDevCo's Smallholder Development Unit (SDU) to shed light on the challenges and opportunities associated with GAP adoption among smallholder farmers (SHFs) in the tea sector. Several quick insights: 1. Poor Adoption of GAPs:?Despite concerted efforts by WTC and SDU to offer training and support, the uptake of GAPs among outgrowers has fallen short of expectations, affecting yields, quality, and incomes. 2. Understanding Farmer Perspectives:?Leveraging human-centred design (HCD) methodologies, we delved deep into the underlying reasons for low GAP adoption, revealing valuable insights into the mindset and priorities of SHFs. 3. Overarching Project Goal:?Our overarching goal is to boost the yields and quality of tea produced by outgrowers, thereby bolstering incomes for farmers and ensuring a sustainable supply chain for WTC. Relevance to Corporates in the Agriculture Sector: The challenges encountered by tea outgrowers resonate with broader issues faced in agriculture supply chains. By comprehending the intricacies of GAP adoption and proactively addressing the identified barriers, companies have the potential to drive positive transformations not only within their operations but also across their entire supply networks.
