I thought attending #PCMACL would offer me resources and information on how to elevate my approach to corporate event strategy… It absolutely did. But I also walked away with wisdom and perspective on something that’s been top of mind as I approach this new chapter of Margas Corporate Events. As I hire a team of contractors to help support MCE's growth, I am keenly aware of the fact that I have never led a team of my own. The question lingers: “Do I have what it takes to become a great leader?” Brené Brown, researcher, storyteller and one of #PCMACL's keynote speakers addressed this question with a simple answer: The path to becoming a bold and courageous leader is found by deeply caring for others and embracing the discomfort and vulnerability of not having all the answers. If you know me, you understand that not having all the answers is an uncomfortable place for me to be. But in the words of #BreneBrown, “It’s not supposed to be easy, it’s supposed to be meaningful and honest”. Her words ignited an excitement to enter this new chapter with authenticity and courage, understanding that putting people first will always create a more meaningful and impactful outcome. After three and a half years at Uplight, I am stepping down from my role as Senior Community and Events Manager and dedicating my full attention to Margas Corporate Events, effective June 1st. While the opportunity to embark on this entrepreneurial journey is an absolute dream come true, leaving Uplight has been the most difficult decision in my career thus far. My role at Uplight has never been just a job to me. It’s a place where I felt empowered, supported and heard. Uplight gave me the freedom to help shape an event strategy that proudly amplifies its brand, showcases its thought leadership and connects to its community. I am leaving Uplight with more gratitude and fulfillment than I can ever express. I’ve spent a lot of time these past few months reflecting on my career in events. Event management is fast paced and high pressure, and admittedly there are many times when I've asked myself why I care so much. But the answer is simple: events change the way we do business. Community and event initiatives are ways to humanize an organization. It welcomes vulnerability and authenticity and personality and life! It's about showcasing work we're proud of, and putting a face to the name you've been emailing for months. It's about discovering the "why", inspiring your community and tapping into emotion. I am fortunate enough to get a front row seat.
