Earlier this year, we announced a community-informed process to redesign the application-based grant programs for our three partner foundations: Mardag Foundation, Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation and F. R. Bigelow Foundation. Today, we are announcing an update on that work. Beginning in 2026, each of the three Foundations will make grants using new application processes and updated funding priorities. We anticipate posting detailed guidelines and application information late in 2025. To create the capacity our staff needs to operationalize these changes, the three Foundations will each implement transitional grant rounds in 2025. Mardag Foundation, Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation and F. R. Bigelow Foundation have awarded more than $8 million to Minnesota nonprofits in the first round of 2024 grantmaking. Grants will provide funding resources for community organizations that provide critical resources to Minnesotans across the state. Many grants support the arts, embrace culture and cultural differences to grow and restore our communities. They also address a variety of concerns including navigating the criminal justice system, the US school system, immigrant communities and preserving Indigenous practices and traditions. Some of the incredible organizations funded in this round of grantmaking include We Resolve, Conexiones, Bear Paws Cultural Art, Theresa Living Center, Exposed Brick Theatre and MENDOTA MDEWAKANTON DAKOTA COMMUNITY. Today we are announcing that throughout 2024 and 2025 we will be engaging in a community-informed process to redesign our twice-yearly grant programs. We’re pleased to share a new impact report for the East Metro Main Street Economic Revitalization Program, which supported 42 Saint Paul nonprofits and businesses that faced immense challenges the past four years due to the pandemic, civil unrest and other obstacles. With support from Mardag Foundation and other funding partners, the Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation and the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development granted $3.7 million to nonprofits and $3.3 million to businesses in the Snelling-University-Rice Cultural District, the East Side community and along West Seventh Street in Saint Paul. 100% of the funded projects serve communities that have been historically under- and dis-invested by traditional funding, and 85% of the projects are owned or led by people of color. For more than 50 years Mardag Foundation has been serving Minnesotans in the East Metro and Greater Minnesota. Formed as a charitable trust in memory of Agnes Ober, who turned to philanthropy after growing up in poverty, it has grown into a foundation that strives to support youth, families and older adults in our community. Keeping up that family tradition of generosity and care is Sam Eberhart, president of Mardag Foundation’s Board of Directors. As the great grandson of Agnes, he has been a vital member of the board for 12 years. Under his leadership the Foundation has advanced its goal of becoming an anti-racist and more equitable foundation.
