Hiring the right people and developing them is still a winning solution for firms of all kinds—RIAs, BDs, small advisory firms, wealthtechs, etc. Despite the quickly changing landscape across all aspects of wealth management, it still comes back to having the right people, at the right time, to deliver and grow with you. Mark Tibergien was talking about this when he was with BNY Mellon | Pershing, and it is still the right message. Three things I talk to my consulting clients about are: 1. Are the people who brought you success in the last 2-3 years the same people who will deliver success for you in the next 2-3 years? 2. Are you investing in the right disciplines to develop people (think mentoring, job shadowing, development plans, leadership training, etc.) and are they being driven from the top? 3. What does your Employee Value Proposition (EVP) look like? While this has been around for a long time, I am surprised that many firms do not have one. My favorite leadership guide over the last 10 years has been Patrick Leddin, Ph.D., who is a best-selling author, professor at Vanderbilt University, co-founder of the Leddin Group, and host of the Leadership Lab podcast (top 1% globally). While I didn't know him personally, I followed everything he put out on LinkedIn, downloaded all the free leadership tools he made available, and bought some of the leadership tools he was selling. What I love about Patrick's work is that he makes leadership actionable, explainable, and fun! Late last year, I sent an application in to be part of a small group to get certified in the Leddin Group Certified Guide training program, based on his The Wall Street Journal best-selling book, The 5 Week Leadership Challenge. In February, I had the opportunity to spend a day and a half in Nashville with Patrick, his wife, Jamie, Kevin Daley (Co-founder and CEO of the Leddin Group), and five other people. The Leddin Group team are high-integrity people, and it was great to meet new people who were part of the cohort. Coming off the launch of my new book, Funding a New Business for Dummies (with Eric Butow), Patrick invited me to be on the Leadership Lab podcast, and the link to the podcast is below.
