Michigan has no laws that support or encourage micro-schools, but the national movement is the fastest-growing education reform. In 2023, there was a 4,000 increase in charter public school enrollment nationwide and a 1 million student increase in micro-schools/homeschools. ?? Why are so many families fleeing public education to homeschool or enter their kids into a micro-school? Legislation is quickly being introduced nationwide, supporting and incentivizing families with more choices, including micro-schools and charter schools.

In our divisive world there seems to be agreement on this, that K-12 education is an important topic. Improving student outcomes and addressing talent supply challenges, including educator supply, education is a priority to grow MI. As a result, it’s a key political issue. We at MAPSA hear from the MI charter sector that charter public schools can be the catalyst to drive broader education forward in personalized learning, in multiple pathways, in reimagining the role of the educator, and in what accountability means and looks like. Michigan charter schools are bucking trends, academic performance is up, enrollment is up, and the public and educators continue to support charter opportunities. But what about the politics of education? This article asks an interesting question: how can charter schools have a political future??

This fall, Red Oak Academy, a new K-8 Global Educational Excellence charter school in Clinton Township, opened its doors with a unique focus on serving Arabic-speaking students. With a target enrollment of 100, the school offers an Arabic language curriculum alongside core subjects, aiming to support the diverse immigrant and refugee population in Macomb County. Superintendent Michael Conran emphasized the school’s mission to build strong community ties by offering language support, restorative practices, and even household assistance for families in need.
