The current administration issued an Executive Order calling for "reliable, diversified, and affordable supply of energy to drive our Nation’s manufacturing, transportation, agriculture, and defense industries, and to sustain the basics of modern life and military preparedness.†This Executive Order is creating more energy scarcity by choosing fossil fuels over what's already in the interconnection queue. Will it be PJM all over again? The Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) is set to open its 2025/26 planning resource auction on March 26, 2025, with results expected on April 28. In the piece below, Rao Konidena analyzes the situation, which echoes the recent PJM auction and its increased capacity prices. We know of at least one solution, for MISO, PJM, and the rest of the nation: Virtual power plants (VPPs)! VPPs are quicker and cheaper to deploy than large power plants, and they are more resilient. Using existing distributed energy resources — including rooftop solar, batteries, EVs, smart thermostats, and other controllable devices and loads — VPPs have shown they can keep the lights on when the grid is stressed.
