Noticing a loved one making questionable decisions—like giving away large sums of money or neglecting their hygiene? Changes in judgment and decision-making can be an early sign of Alzheimer’s. Everyone makes mistakes now and then (who hasn’t skipped an oil change?), but consistent poor judgment—especially with money or self-care—can be a red flag. If you see this happening, encourage them to check in with a doctor. Early detection matters. An estimated 2.8 million Americans sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI) each year, and the effects can be life-changing. From difficulty with movement and speech to changes in memory, mood, and problem-solving, TBI impacts every aspect of life. For some, recovery is short-term. But for others, long-term disabilities require ongoing support through physical therapy, occupational therapy, and cognitive rehabilitation. Early intervention makes a difference. As Kelsi Schiltz, DPT, from University of Utah Health emphasizes: “Exercise, participating in regular activities, and getting into a routine can help blood flow to the brain and drive neural recovery.” With the right support, individuals can regain skills and independence—even when the prognosis seems uncertain. At MapHabit, we believe in empowering individuals with brain injuries through structured routines, visual maps, and cognitive tools that support rehabilitation and daily life. Whether recovering from a TBI or managing long-term effects, our platform helps individuals and caregivers create sustainable habits for independence. For week 7 in our series on the early signs and symptoms of #AlzheimersDisease, we're focusing on misplacing items and struggling to retrace steps. We all lose our keys or glasses from time to time—but someone with Alzheimer’s may put objects in unusual places (e.g., shoes in the fridge), be unable to retrace their steps to find lost items, or frequently accuse others of stealing as their memory declines. ?What's typical? Occasionally misplacing things is normal, but when it becomes a pattern—especially with unusual placements—it could be a sign of cognitive decline. If you notice this in a loved one, it’s important to have a conversation with their doctor. It's week 6 of our 10-week series on the early signs and symptoms of #AlzheimersDisease, and today we're highlighting difficulties with speaking or writing. People living with Alzheimer’s or other dementias may: ??? Struggle to follow or join conversations ?? Lose their train of thought mid-sentence ?? Repeat themselves often ?? Have trouble finding the right word or use the wrong name for familiar objects (for example, calling a "watch" a "hand-clock") Occasionally searching for the right word is normal with age, but consistent difficulty with language could be a sign of something more. If you notice a loved one struggling with communication, it may be time to check in with a doctor.
